Rally organizers hoped the show of strength would send a strong message to the province along with the number of petitions and letters generated at the event. Speakers at the rally emphasized that Bowmanville Hospital is not closing, however a shortage of specialists is threatening the level of acute care services provided at the hospital. "That's when I saw this one man who obviously couldn't walk, and who had only limited use of his arms. He had no wheelchair. He dragged himself across that busy street with three lanes of traffic. That was shocking." "Similarly, the hospitals work with so little, it was disheartening for the ladies on the medical team to see how limited the clinics and hospitals were," he adds. According to Brouwer, the team brought medical supplies for the clinics. The building team also brought lots of tools, which were left behind for the people to use. And the gospel assembly team left supplies for the schools. "We came back with a pretty light load," he says. Back at the church office, Brouwer says this was his first overseas mission, but it won't be his last. "I know it sounds like a cliché, but I really think it's life changing.
