Wednesday, April 15, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Just wondering I see that the town has decided to close down the scrap yard in Crooked Creek belonging to Jim and Bill Hale. Just wondering what will become of all the scrap metal in the area. In my line of work I am in and out of many homes, and do work for the elderly and people unable to dispose of unused metal and other articles. Since the New Year, I have removed one old oil tank, one combination wood/oil furnace, two hot water tanks, and countless fridges, stoves, washers and dryers. A gentleman with a truck comes by when I phone and helps bring them out of the basements, or wherever and we throw them on his truck. He charges nothing, only what he receives at the scrap metal yard. It pays his gas mostly, and I'm glad to help folks. Will the town pick these articles up for free? I think not. They will not go into people homes and carry things out. Will people not just leave things wherever, in ditches, ravines or just along the road? Maybe the bigger articles can be dropped into the pot holes. Just wondering if Orono and area should break away from Clarington and become Clarke Township again. We have our own town hall with a jail cell right in it. We have our own roads and a new snow plow and works department. Our fire truck is brand new and shinny. In Orono we have no stop lights, everyone waits for the other guy. I would gladly become mayor and ask for no wages. Just one stipulation: put me on the Veridian Board, that amount of money would suffice. There have been rumblings in the area that the town or government would not like to have any form of card playing to raise money for charities. That greed by the government is being carried a little too far. The people that come to these card games do not harm the casinos in the province. They pay and play for a mere pittance and small lunch after. Just wondering why. Just wondering. There is discussion in Mississauga and Barrie about councillors /boards/remuneration. I am hoping this issue will find its way back to our Council before 2010!!
