10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, May 6, 2009 The Reel Thing Movie Reviews by: Sharon McCartney In all the columns I have written, this one I found most interesting. At the 29th Genie Awards, Passchendaele won for "Achievement in Overall Sound." Won by Don White, Lou Solakofski, Garrell Clark, and Steve Foster. Don is the son of Carman and Bertha White. Born in Orono, Nov. 26th, 1951, he grew up to become a sound editor. My own son was looking into that field and it is a small, elite group that "makes it" in this industry. When looking him up on the internet, I find his list of movies reads like a who's who of Canadian and American Film: Quest for Fire, The Bay Boy, Becoming Jane, Nancy Drew, Knocked Up, The 40-year-old Virgin, A History of Violence, Moon Struck - I could go on and on. He has been nominated for 23 Genie Awards and this was his 7th win. His company is "Foot Steps Studio," located in Uxbridge. His next movie is Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, released on May 1st, with Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey. I love writing about Canadians who make it and even more about our own. Congratulations Don! Excellent work. I went to see the movie State of Play staring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Helen Mirren and Canada's own Rachel McAdams. Based on the BBC miniseries of the same name, this political thriller is very well-written and acted. I enjoyed watching all these great actors interact. The story is well thought out, lots of twists and a great ending. I thought Russell Crowe took the role of "sloppy newspaper man" to perfection. He gained a lot of weight for the movie Body of Lies and still hadn't taken it off (he has it off now for the filming of Robin Hood scheduled for 2010) In the first scene, he is singing along to Great Big Sea, the band from Newfoundland. I enjoyed this film. Not as much as Gladiator or Beautiful Mind but it is a good see. I give this film 4 out of 5. Advertise in the ORONO WEEKLY TIMES 905-983-5301 · oronotimes@rogers.com
