Wednesday, May 27, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 9 The Reel Thing Movie Reviews by: Sharon McCartney I remember going to see the first Terminator movie. It was a low-budget movie with a nobody cast. But it had a strange story line and a twist in it that made it really original. It starred a new actor / body builder by the name of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Terminator Salvation is true to the first one, a postapocalyptic-America science fiction, about a machine versus human war. It stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Anton Yelchin. It is well-written, directed and I love the fact it doesn't have that bouncy shaky filming that is so popular in action films. The special effects are great, moves fast and doesn't have a lot of stupid inside jokes. I truly think this is the action film of the summer. It starts with a punch, and brings in the characters logically. The only thing I would change is Christian Bale; he is still Batman to me. I would go and see it again and I usually don't do that. I also suggest you rent the first Terminator and watch it before you go to this one. I give this film 4.75 out of 5. I also went to see Star Trek. I remember the original series in reruns on TV. It was a great time, then the movies, then the new TV series. The followers of this series are really dedicated. I thought it was entertaining. This new movie is, I think, the best so far... but really, that isn't saying much. William Shatner must cringe when he thinks of some the Star Trek films. The faces are fresh and the acting is good, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, and Anton Yelchin. It has all the old characters and they still are going "where no man [sorry, no one!] has gone before." This is a good summer flick; it is entertaining, and exciting. I have one question for all the diehard Trekkies... Isn't Spock supposed to be something like 500 years old? What is he doing as a young man? Go and see it, it is a good film. I give this film 3.5 out of 5. Maybe rent some other quirky sci-fi movies: Road Warrior (all three), Blade Runner, 1984, Matrix (all three) Star Wars (all six), Close Encounters, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clock Work Orange, Alien, Robo Cop, Total Recall, and Independence Day. STOCKWELL Continued from page 5 member from NewmarketAurora, who also served in Mike Harris and Ernie Eves cabinets. Randy Hillier would have to be considered a dark horse in this race, due to the fact that he is a rookie member of the House and has a tendency of saying what he thinks, something that the more experienced politicians have learned to avoid, especially during leadership races. Some of the most successful politicians of our time have been adept at dancing the political two-step. Get elected, and then you can really show your hand to the public. However, it is very, very, dangerous to voice your true feel- ings on any given subject before you have closed the deal. Probably the most adept at this was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. While running for an unprecedented third term as U.S. president in 1940 he campaigned on the promise he "would not send American boys into any foreign wars", while secretly planning entry into World War II and supporting Great Britain with munitions to be used against the Axis. In Canada, during the same timeframe, Prime Minister MacKenzie King faced with an angry Quebec populace against conscription into the Canadian Armed Forces - came out with his historic "not necessarily conscription, but conscription if necessary." Hillier hangs all of his policies on the clothesline for public viewing. As different, and probably admirable as this is, in the game of politics it could be suicidal. Preston Manning, in rallying support for his Reform movement, found this out in spades. So there you have it, four candidates vying for a job that will eventually put them headto-head with Premier Dalton McGuinty. Randy Hillier has a lot to learn in a very short time. However, as his core support comes from rural Ontario, folks that know something about grassroots, he could be the dark horse. If not a dark horse, a king maker.....or queen maker.....whatever he chooses.
