6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, June 10, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Matt's Angle by Matt Dobson Early season bass fishing Opening day of bass season is by far the most anticipated day among fishermen and women in Ontario. With our short bass season in this area, many make the most of it throughout the summer months and beyond, especially me. But bass fishing, come late June, is not like the dog days of summer here in Ontario. The water is still relatively cool compared to summer temperatures and the bass are fresh off the spawning period and not nearly as active as mid- to late-season bass. First thing is slow down! Bass fishermen are well known to be fast and furious: fishing quick baits and blasting around the lake in search of better spots. The water is still cool and the bass are slower, so this is the time to fish spots slower and more thoroughly, not cover a whole lot of water. As for location, largemouth will be found in the shallows of the lake. Shallow bays that were used by largemouth for spawning are best. The bulk of the largemouth population will still be in or around the spawning bays. What I mean by around is they will be on the first section of deeper water towards the mouth of the bay. With smallmouth, they will be found in their typical summer spots. Search typical smallmouth spots that are shallower than most summer spots. Rock points, rock/weed mix, and boulder patches hold early-season bait fish and crayfish which draw the smallmouth like magnets. Now I'm not saying to ditch your proven game plan, but if you find yourself scratching your head on the lake or you don't have a game plan at all, here's where to start and find what works for you. Matt "Dobber" Dobson is from Orono, and attends Sir Sanford Fleming College. He fishes using a 2000 Skeeter sx175 boat with a Yamaha 115hp motor. 40th season history: Kendal remembers Kendal Eagles Harvey Jackson Pitchers' duel by Chris Stark The Kendal Eagles faced off with one of the nation's top senior ball teams on Wednesday night. Oshawa has represented Ontario in the last two Canadian National Championships. The Eagles were looking for big things from starting pitcher, Phil Cammisuli and he didn't disappoint. Phil threw eight strong innings, all but shutting down the juggernaut that is the Oshawa offence. Over eight innings he gave up only two runs and four singles, a flare, a ground ball with eyes, a dying quail, and a bleeder. The Eagles found themselves down only 2-0 against the league-leading Royals and one rally away from a victory. However, the Eagle bats couldn't help Cammisuli out as Oshawa's pitching was also dominant. The wheels came off in the ninth inning and the final score ended up Oshawa 9, Eagles 1. The birds should claim a small moral victory for playing eight solid innings against a tough opponent. The Eagles played the Whitby Canadians on Tuesday, but due to a deadline the game details are not available. The next home action for the Eagles will be on Sunday June 21, vs. the Whitby Canadians, game time 12 noon.
