Wednesday, July 8, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 3 The Reel Thing Movie Reviews by: Sharon McCartney I thought I would do my column on `chick flicks' this time, what with summer and nice weather and going out... you get the picture. When I went to see My Sister's Keeper I thought it would be touching, maybe a courtroom thing about a family with ethical questions. I never thought it would be so heart wrenching, I cried all the way through it. I had read somewhere that Cameron Diaz did her best acting in it; she is ok but the kids in this film blow her out of the water. The lead role of Anna Fitzgerald is played by Abigail Breslin (Signs, What I Like About You, Little Miss Sunshine Oscar win, Princess Diary 2). She is conceived to be a perfect match for her sister, played by Sofia Vassilieva (Eloise, Medium) who has leukemia. The film covers lots of issues, the main one being the rights of the child where genetic engineering is involved. The lead character wants "medical emancipation" and it is so very well portrayed. Sofia Vassillieva is a beautiful young up-and-coming actor. She was born in October 1992; she speaks three languages and is studying two more. Dakota Fanning was offered this role but turned it down because she didn't want to shave her head. Alec Baldwin, and Jason Patric also star in this film. It is based on the book by Jodi Picoult. So go and see this film, and enjoy a heartfelt performance. Take lots of tissues. I give this film a 4 3/4 out of 5. I also went to see The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock (Speed, The Lake House, Miss Congeniality, Premonition, Two Weeks Notice, Murder by Numbers, While You Were Sleeping) and Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins, Smokin' Aces, Blade Trinity,). It is a predictable love story that has been told quite a few times, but it still works. The chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds is good, the acting is funny and the timing is excellent. I did find that the best acting was done by Betty White who plays Reynolds' grandmother - she steals the show. It takes place in Alaska. The scenery is breath-taking. Bullock plays a nasty boss and Reynolds plays the abused assistant. She needs to get married or be deported back to Canada (it's kind of funny Reynolds is the Canadian) - an easy film to watch, lots of laughs. I give this film a 3 out of 5. Some new releases on DVD: Defiance, Revolutionary Road, He's Just Not That Into You, Gran Torino. Teresa Vanhaverbeke (left) and Jackie Foxall of the Newcastle BIA presented Donna Wood (centre) with a cheque for winning the Newcastle banner design contest last week. Her winning design is shown in the inset. WATER Continued from front page This, along with additional nutrient-loading into Lake Ontario from creeks and storm sewers and waste water plants, has created ideal conditions for algae growth. A similar situation occurred in Whitby in 2005 which was cleared up in a couple of weeks, according to Presta. He doesn't see the situation in Newcastle worsening, but it is really up to the weather and movement of water. "If more mats detach, the likelihood of them entering the water supply plant are good," Presta said. "All we can do is monitor the lake." Church Directory Orono United Church orono.uc@rogers.com Rev.
