6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, July 15, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Kendal Eagles prey on Tigers by Chris Stark It was a busy week for the Boys in Blue this week as they played three games in Kendal. They came away with two victories, while letting a third slip through their grasp. On Wednesday night the Eagles invited the Peterborough Tigers down to Kendal. The young Tigers team jumped all over the Birds building up a 4-1 lead. Hackett with a towering three run long ball and Kyle Vowels with a two run round-tripper. Trew went 3-5 in the game, including a key single that drove in a run in late rally. The Eagles went on to score four runs in the inning, taking a lead that they would not relinquish. The Eagles got strong pitching performances from both Evan Moore and Jay Hamilton. Hamilton threw 4-2/3 innings of no hit baseball, while striking out five. After the victory the Eagles looked forward to their next game against the rival Port Hope Flyers. Friday night was dubbed as the game of the week and it did not disappoint. The Eagles bats remained red hot and took an early 6-1 lead by BJ chances to put the Flyers away, but couldn't come up with a timely hit. The Flyers bats then came alive and the Eagles found themselves up by one run, 6-5 in the ninth inning. The boys gave up a tough leadoff walk that lead to the tying run and then the Flyers took the lead. After blowing a five run lead the team was deflated and there would be no come back on this night. Troy Foster threw a strong seven innings, but was out duelled by former Eagle, Corey Baker who went the distance to collect the win for the Flyers. Fortunately the Eagles didn't have much time to dwell on this devastating loss, two days later they were back at Jackson Memorial to take on the Tigers again. Sunday was a picture perfect day for baseball and the Eagles look to get there second win of the week. The Birds sent Jason "The Mailman" Carroll to the mound for his second start of the season. The crafty righthander was untouchable through the first four innings as the Eagles built up a 4-0 lead. In the fifth the Tigers got to Carroll for three runs and visions of Friday nights collapse came to mind. However, the Eagles looked like they learned from their previous mistakes and tacked on some insurance runs. With a final 7-4 score the Eagles earned their second win of the week. Evan Moore had a great day going 2-2, with 2 BB and 2 RBI. Relief pitcher, Kyle Vowels was dominant in his second appearance on the mound, throwing three innings of one hit baseball. The Eagles regular season record now stands at 6-11. Boxscore Peterborough Kendal R H E 4 7 3 7 3 0 This week the Eagles look to avenge last week's loss to the Port Hope Flyers. They will play a home and home with the Flyers, Wednesday night's game will be at the Town Park in Port Hope, 7:30 start.
