Councillors opted to cancel the remainder of the Senior Snow Clearing program for the 2009/2010 winter season at last week's council meeting. As of May 31st, $27,491 has been spent of the $85,000 allocated to this program in the 2009 budget. Since 2002, the muncipality has cleared sidewalks and windrows -- the snow piled up at the end of the driveway after the snowplow has cleared the road, for seniors and physically disabled residents. To be eligible for the service, applicants must be 65 years of age or older or be physically disabled, and occupy a single family dwelling which fronts onto a municipal street. No able bodied persons under the age of 65 may be residing on the property. In 2008, the budget for the Senior and Physically Disabled Sidewalk Program was $85,000. It cost the municipality $89,378 in the 2008 calender year to service the 724 residents eligible for the service. Of the residents enrolled in the program last year, 412 live in Bowmanville, 166 live in Courtice, 83 in Newcastle, 22 in Orono with the remainder spread throughout Clarington. The budget for the Senior and Physically Disabled Sidewalk Program in 2007 was $85,000 but only $78,856 was spent. There were a total of 45 snow events in the 2007 calendar year, with 664 eligible residents availing themselves of the program. The total budget in 2006 SNOW see page 4 photo by S. Weigand Adam Duke of Enniskillen landed a kick flip off the ramp at the new Orono skate park last Wednesday, following the opening ceremony hosted by the Orono Amateur Athletic Association. Cemetery vandalized again Twice in the space of a week, vandals knocked over tombstones at the Bond Head Cemetery in Newcastle. Police estimate that at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday, July 10, suspects entered the Bond Head Cemetery located on Queen Victoria Ave., and kicked over 66 tombstones. A number of stones were damaged as was various property surrounding the tombstones. Police estimate the damage at over $10,000. A contractor was hired by the municipality who put the tombstones back on their bases on Tuesday, July 14. Sometime between 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, and 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July16, unknown suspects entered the Bond Head Cemetery again and overturned and damaged an additional 14 tombstones. Police estimate the damage of this second occuranace to be $5,000. On Thursday, the contractor was hired again to set the tombstones upright on their bases. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealling to the public for assistance to identify the person or persons responsible.
