6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, July 22, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Eagles finally down Flyers by Chris Stark This week the Eagles schedule featured a home and home showdown with the Port Hope Flyers. The Boys sent work horse Phil Cammisulli to the mound looking for his first win of the season. The Flyers sent veteran 'slopper', Marc McDonald to the hill. McDonald and Cammisulli engauged in a classic pitchers' duel. Cammisulli went six innings, scattering four hits, three base-on balls, and mixing in six strikeouts. He gave way to fellow sophomore Evan Moore with the score still knotted at zeros. Moore promptly walked the first batter he saw and the runner then stole second base. The next batter singled to left field and the throw to the plate was cut off by first bagger Mark Foster, because the runner had held up at third. Foster then ran down the runBoxscore Kendal Port Hope R 0 1 H 9 6 E 2 1 hit the ball hard all night, but they made a point out of hitting it right at the Port Hope defence. Catcher, Lee "Rube" Allin was a prime example as he hit 'rockets' in all four of his at-bats, but when the dust cleared he came away with only one double. Shortstop Bryan Landry had a terrific night going 4-4 at the plate with four singles. For the second game in a row the Eagles out-hit the Flyers, but came out on the short end of a close game. On Sunday afternoon, the Flyers came to Kendal to complete the second half of the home and home. Nick Stacey got the call for the Eagles and he did not disappoint. Stacey threw five innings, giving up only one hit, with four walks and five strikeouts. Stacey gave way to Russ Hunt and left him with a 4-2 lead. The resilient Flyers would not give in. They battled back to tie the game with runs off Hunt and Kyle Vowels, who had replaced Hunt in the eighth inning. With the game tied in the tenth inning, an error gave Port Hope a runner at second with no one out. Vowels did not lose his focus and turned in one of the gutsiest performances of the year. He induced a ground ball from the next batter, leaving the Flyers with a runner on third with one out. Boxscore Port Hope Kendal R 4 5 H 5 14 E 3 3 mer Eagle Cory Baker was swinging away and hit a chopper back to Vowels on the mound for the second out of the inning. Vowels finished the next batter off with a weak fly out to third baseman Jay Hamilton. Vowels had turned the tide. Chris Stark led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and was advanced to second on a David Trew sacrifice bunt. Rookie Chris Mullen came to the plate and ripped a pitch down the right field line driving in the winning run. Vowels picked up the win and more importantly the Eagles got the monkey (defeating the rival Flyers) off their backs. Offensively the Eagles pounded out fourteen hits, stand out performers were Landry and Kyle Searle with two hits a piece. ner who had ventured too far from the safety of first base. Unfortunately in the process, the runner from third scored to give the Flyers a one-run lead. The single run was all McDonald needed and he closed it out for a complete game, 1-0 victory.
