Wednesday, September 2, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 11 FAIR Continued from page 5 and adult volunteers will be leading the tours. Meanwhile, grades 4, 5, and 6 will start with the Farmer's Olympics. "That's the part I'll be running," says Hartwell. The Farmer's Olympics will be held in front of the grandstand. There will be six events or agricultural oriented games, starting with the standard tug of war, the bale roll (with a 4' round bale), a pitchfork throw (not a real pitchfork), a seedsack race, a horseshoe relay, and even a tractor pull, he says. Students from Orono, Kirby and St. Francis of Assisi schools will be competing against each other, he adds. In the last hour, the students will get demonstrations about water preservation from CLOCA, technology, beef, labels, dairy and pioneer methods. The intermediate students, grades 7 and 8 from The Pines, will get these demonstrations first, and then participate in the Farmer's Olympics. Altogether, almost 300 students will have participated in the agricultural program by the time it wraps up around 2 p.m., says Hartwell. Organizers would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make the games possible, as well as Evergreen Tractor for the tractor pull, Rona Hardware in Newcastle for the pitchfork, and Gagnon Sports of Oshawa for the archery targets.
