16 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, September 2, 2009 MOSPORT Continued from page 8 found his mirrors full of perennial rival Steve Mayhew (#14 Mayhew Graphics Nova) and the surprisingly quick #10 Chevrolet of Dale Wood. Focusing on the job at hand, Baker ignored his challengers, and never put a wheel wrong as he powered away for his first win of the 2009 season. "Hot dog, that was fun!," proclaimed a beaming Baker. "That was an awesome race. It's taken a bit of work and fiddling, but it's nice to see the old ThunderCars and the new Sportsman cars coming together to get a nice, balanced field." With a clear track ahead of him, Baker was able to pull away from the opposition, but this was not the case for Mayhew. Forced to defend his position against Dale Wood for several of the opening laps, Mayhew eventually found himself the target for points leader Bill Northam. With his #85 Five Points Mall Monte Carlo at full song, Northam was able to close up to the back bumper of Mayhew's Nova, but following a trio of bumper to bumper racing laps, the checkered flag ended the dice with Mayhew holding on for the runner-up spot. Wood faded slightly as the race progressed, but still crossed the line in a well- deserved fourth place, while Terry Shaw came home in fifth. A horribly misfiring engine in the #27 Ford kept the Scarborough, Ontario driver from mounting a serious challenge. The Late Models The tone for Saturday's Late Model feature race was set early, with pole sitter Doug Wills (#25 MATCO Tools Ford) on the receiving end of a healthy nudge from behind as the 11-car field streamed towards the event's green flag. Already on a finely-balanced edge of power versus adhesion, Wills was unable to collect his car after the bump and bounced off the pit wall, which ended the night for the Orono, Ontario-based driver before the race had even begun. With the field realigned for the start, the green flag flew with 19 year-old Shannon Kimmerly powering her #01S Graphic Lettering Service Impala onto the point, leading Terry Betts (#86 Pingle's Farm Market Chevrolet) and series rookie Bryan Sudsbury (#29 Sun Tan Kiss Cobalt) through the opening laps. Betts and Sudsbury eventually swapped positions, but the race leading trio were directly in the crosshairs of points leader Dan Kimmerly (#01 Dom's Auto Parts) and defending series champion Dwight Brown. By the race's mid-point, Kimmerly and Brown had wrestled Betts aside, and the two veteran drivers battled and banged door handle to door handle for four full laps. They exchanged positions on each tour of the half-mile oval, in the race for third spot. Eventually this high speed game of bumper tag allowed them to catch the race leaders. As a result of the pushing, shoving and fender banging, Dan Kimmerly spun in Turn One on lap 17, which lead to a caution and set up a three lap shootout. In a show of pure determination and talent, tinged with a pinch of adrenaline, Brown (#20 Bourque Transmission Monte Carlo) ducked low on Shannon's #01 Chevy as the pair exited Turn Two on lap 18, squeezing through into the race lead. John Baker Jr. (#23 Freeman Motorsports Ford), also seized the opportunity to leapfrog past Kimmerly and Sudsbury into second place. The top two positions remained static until the checkered flag on lap 20. "That was a full contact night of racing," admitted Brown. "When Doug spun on the opening lap, I got into Baker and jacked him up. I don't like having too many marks on the car when I'm done, it means a lot of hours in the shop this week." Sudsbury, made a last lap charge to cross the stripe a mere bumper's width behind Baker but was forced to settle for third place, while Terry Betts edged past Shannon Kimmerly also on the last lap to secure the fourth spot. Coming up this week: The THORSONS EVT Triple 25 Late Model races highlight a full night of stock car action that also includes the THORSONS EVT 6 or Less Cars and the R.P. Oil Modifieds.
