6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, September 9, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Eagles are Ontario Champions by Chris Stark This past weekend the Kendal Eagles hosted ten teams from across Ontario in the Senior 'B' Ontario Championships. It all started Friday night as the fans flowed into Harvey Jackson Memorial Park before the opening game that pitted the Chatham Brewers against your hometown Eagles. Game One Boxscore R H Chatham 0 3 Kendal 2 7 E 0 0 Chatham was a semi finalist in last year's championship and proved to be a tough opponent. Phil Cammisulli was the game one starter for Kendal and he looked a little shaky as he loaded the bases in the first inning. In a tournament like this there are many small things that have to fall into place to be successful and that started while the bases where loaded. Cammisulli unleashed a wild pitch that took a favourable hop back to catcher Kyle Searle. Searle threw the runner out at the plate to get Cammisulli out of the bases loaded jam. Troy Foster came through with a clutch single in the fourth to drive in Bryan Landry and then the Birds added another insurance run in the sixth. That was all the run support Cammisulli needed as he went the distance to pick up the shutout. Game MVP Cammisulli. Game Boxscore Kendal Tillsonburg Three R H 8 12 5 6 E 1 1 After game two the Eagles earned a bye into the next round and played Tillsonburg Saturday night in the final game of undefeated teams. The team was reminded by trainer Bert Reid that it was exactly ten years ago the Eagles were playing in the Ontario 'C' Championships in Tillsonburg. On Saturday night ten years ago the Eagles also faced off with Tillsonburg in the undefeated game. That team was able to pick up a 2-0 win in one of the most exciting games in Kendal history. This year Nick Stacey started the game for the Eagles. In the second inning both teams traded runs, each executing perfect suicide squeezes. In the third both teams traded runs and the score remained 2-2 until the sixth. In the sixth the Eagle offence exploded with six runs on five hits. The offence was highlighted by a Chris Stark two RBI double that he hit after Tillsonburg had intentionally loaded the bases. Kyle Vowles led the way for the Eagles going 3-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Stacey went the distance, improving his perfect playoff record to 3-0. Both teams commented on the electric atmosphere that was provided by the nearly two hundred fans cheering on the sidelines. Game MVP - Stacey. EAGLES see page 7 Got a sports story? This seemed to be the game where the boys got their swagger back. Foster took a no hitter into the seventh inning, losing his bid on a single by the first batter. However, he went the distance striking out five to get the victory. The Kendal bats came up with a hit in each inning and pounded out a total of eleven hits in the game. Landry led the attack going 4-4 with a walk, a run scored, and two RBI. Game MVP - Troy ST.
