Wednesday, September 30, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 5 Plans for H1N1 flu clinic for Clarington The Durham Region Health Department will have its H1N1 plan ready by the end of the week, according to a Health Department spokesperson. Glendeen Collins, Media Relations for the Durham Region Health Department, told The Times on Tuesday morning, "Durham Region Health Department is hoping to issue information this week based on criteria recommend by the Ministry of Health." The Health Department was authorized by Regional Council last Wednesday to proceed with plans to set up H1N1 influenza immunization clinics. Five clinics will be established throughout the Region, including one in Clarington. Last Thursday, Ontario's chief medical officer of health announced a three-pronged approach to flu vaccination in the province. Given that people over age 65, and residents of long-term care homes are considered to be at greater risk from seasonal flu than the H1N1, they will receive vaccinations for seasonal flu in October. A wider H1N1 vaccination campaign for the rest of the population will begin in November, when a vaccine becomes available. Seasonal flu vaccinations for people younger than 65 will be available after the H1N1 shots have been given. To date, the Region's Health Department is reporting 118 cases of H1N1 and one death, since the flu appeared in the spring. This number has not changed for a few months, though H1N1is present in the Region, according to Collins. In the spring, health care professionals were reporting all flu cases which tested positive for H1N1. Now, health care professionals are only reporting those patients who are at risk of serious complications from the flu. photo by A.
