Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 7 Orono Reps deflated by Woodville Hurricanes ORONO -- The Orono Newcastle Funeral Home peewee reps opened their season this past week with a game against the Woodville Hurricanes. An early goal by Woodville seemed to throw the Orono squad off their game, leading to three more Woodville goals in the second. A late goal by Justin Badour, assisted by Kyle Cordes, kept the team in the game. The coach's talk between the second and third periods led to a much stronger effort by Orono in the third. An outstanding save by goalie Garrett Kealy led to Badour picking up the puck and passing it up to Derek Knoblauch, who was able to find the net, closing the gap. The team continued to battle hard and had some nice chances, but couldn't beat the opposing goaltender. With Orono's goalie pulled, Woodville scored the emptynetter to win the game 5-2. Other team members include: forwards Mark Brydson, Connor Clemens, James Gough and Zach Sinclair; and defensemen Brian Fice, Matthew Haass, Adrian and Spencer Jacobs. The coaching staff consists of coach Duane Knoblauch, assistant Dennis Jacobs, trainers Darin Cordes and Rob Sinclair, and manager Leanne Kealy. -- Vicki Haass Orono Midgets' season starts with a disappointing loss by Tyler Middleton The Orono midget rep team kicked off its season on October 5th with a disappointing 3-2 loss thanks to the Mariposa Lightning. With Brandon Mathwich out due to suspension and Brandon Cox out due to injury, the boys started off the season shorthanded and are hoping to provide more excitement as the season continues forward. In the first period, the boys were suffering from the season-starting jitters, or maybe it was all those hamburgers in the off season. Either way, it was visible that the Orono team was not playing up to its potential. With lack of determination, the boys gave up a breakaway, and like taking candy from a baby, Mariposa capitalized and went up 1-0 with a mere 20.5 seconds remaining in the period. When the puck dropped for the second period, the boys seemed to have a little more spring in their step. With that spring came the penalties, as Orono showed a great lack of discipline receiving an unheard of 22 minutes in penalties. Any hockey fan knows with that much time in the box it is nearly impossible to hold the fort, but with some impressive penalty killing, the boys gave up only one goal at 9:10 in the period, falling behind 2-0. After a short intermission, the third period began with a bang, and the Orono team we know and love cut the lead to one with a great goal scored by number four Ryan Bain, only 27 seconds into the period. Assists went to number 12 Chris Kuijpers, and number seven Jeremy Moore. The boys kept up the intensity and forced Mariposa into an oddman rush where number 15 Eddy Meester pocketed the tying goal on a great play by the rookie goaltender Evan Rosseau. Unfortunately, with a mere 20.5 seconds left on the clock Mariposa scored the go ahead goal, and even after an exciting finish, the goal ended up being the game winner. If the boys can keep up the pace and get into a grove, the team has some great potential. With lots of promising young players, experienced veterans, and returning greats, the season which is about to unfold, will hopefully go down in history. The boys play their first home game on October, 25th at 5:30 p.m at the Orono Arena and Community Centre. Feel free to come out and cheer on your local team. Are you in an abusive relationship?
