6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, October 21, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Two Orono athletes to be honoured in Hall of Fame This year, Orono can be doubly proud of the achievements of its athletes. Two native sons -- both born in Orono, but over one hundred years apart -- are to be honoured at the 2009 Clarington Sports Hall of Fame ceremony this Saturday. Wyman Andrus, who was born in Orono in 1858, achieved fame as the only person in the history of Clarington to have played major league baseball. He was a star sprinter and baseball player growing up in Clarke Township. According to authors Helen Schmid and Sid Rutherford in Out of the Mists: A History of Clarke Township, Andrus was a star ball player for Orono. He later captained the Hamilton Clippers professional baseball club of the Canadian League, and put himself through medical school by playing baseball. The highlight of his tenyear career in professional baseball was on September 15th, 1885, when he started for the Providence Grays in a National League game versus the St. Louis Maroons. He played only one game in the National League, with no hits at four at bats with one strikeout. He was a third baseman. He played professionally from 1884 to 1892 for such teams as the Buffalo Bisons of the International Association, and the Kansas City Cowboys of the Western League. Andrus graduated from the University of Toronto in 1893, and went on to a distinguished career in medicine, culminating in the position of President of the Montana State Medical Association. While still in Orono, Andrus was a member of the Orono Cornet Band, according to Schmid and Rutherford. And as a member, he was featured in the 1880-83 band photo which was noted as the first photograph ever featured in the Orono News, the forerunner of this paper. Andrus died at the age of 76 in Miles City, Montana, and is interred at Custer County Cemetery in Miles City. Adam Colville was born in Orono in 1980. He learned to figure skate at the Orono Figure Skating Club, along with his two sisters, Melissas and Kaitlin. His natural athletic ability and his determination helped him to progress through the competitive ranks. Colville was Pre-Novice, Novice and Junior Men's Champion in the Eastern Ontario section, qualifying to represent Eastern Canada at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in 1997. At the same competition, he qualified with his sister Kaiti in pairs. His impressive showing earned him a position on the Canadian Junior Figure Skating Team where he represented Canada in international events in Slovenia and Hungary. He placed in the top half of both competitions. His promising career was cut short by an abdominal muscle tear injury just as he was preparing for the 1998 Canadian Championships. The boys played hard and won a close game 3-2, defeating the Mustangs in their own rink. The Mustangs came out of the gate on the top of their game in the first, catching the Leafs off guard. With some spectacular saves from goaltender Ryan Brandt, and great defensive play, the boys from Orono managed to fend off the aggressive Mustangs. As the boys caught wind, they started cycling the puck down low, creating some scoring opportunities. They capitalized with 1:26 remaining in the period to go ahead 1-0. The goal came from number five Trevor Hemming, assisted by number seven Jeremy Moore and number eight Tyler Middleton. In the second, the Leafs dominated the Mustangs, spending nearly the entire 15 minutes in the offensive zone. Although Orono was making mince meat of the Mustang defense, the Mustangs goalie allowed only one goal at 11:30 of the period, which put the boys up 2-0. The goal was scored by number four Brandon Cox and was assisted by number 15 Eddy Meester. Credit must be given to Meester for his impressive point shot that just squeaked through the goaltender's fivehole after being re-directed by Cox. After the intermission, the play continued in what ended up being an exciting backand-fourth period. Manvers managed to capitalize at 9:18 of the third period, cutting the lead to 1. Orono didn't take kindly to this, and decided the one-goal lead was uncomfortable, scoring a mere minute and 25 seconds later to re-gain their two-goal lead. The goal came from number three Fred Smith, and was assisted by Meester once again. At that point, Manvers turned up the intensity as time was running short, but through grit and determination, Orono only allowed one more goal with 4:36 remaining. The final score: 3-2 for the Orono Leafs.
