6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, November 4, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Hallowe'en treat: Neil, Burns each score pair Orono Juveniles win home game 7-5 by Doug Henderson Sunday at 3:30 p.m. is home-game time for the Orono Juvenile Team and on the 25th of October, East Gwillimbury came to Orono. The home team scored twice in the first period, the first point going to Tim Kay assisted by Tyler Neil, and the second going to Neil assisted by Kay. East Gwillimbury found the back of the Orono net with only two seconds left in the period. This was the only puck East Gwillimbury managed to get by Orono's stellar net minder Troy Webster. In the second period, Orono went on to score two more points; this time it was Brett Brown assisted by Josh Rekker, and then Rekker assisted by Trevor Dwyer. The third period didn't let up and Orono slammed two more home, the first again by Rekker assisted by Brady Burns, and the final point going to Kay assisted by Greg Konarowski. Orono's second game of the week was played in Bradford on Halloween night. The bench was short with only eight skaters for the Orono team. Orono was in control of the first and second periods. In the first, Orono managed three points, the first goal going to Neil and the next two goals going to Burns, with the first assist going to Cody Graham and the next two going to Neil. In the second period, the Orono squad didn't let up on the Bradford team and pelted the net minder, to walk away with four more points on the board. This time the points went to Rekker, Graham, Neil and Kay, with the assists going to Dwyer, Konarowski, Burns and Graham. Bradford only found the back of the Orono net once in the second period. After the flood, the Orono squad just held on to the win as Bradford came out with extra steam and put four more pucks into the Orono net. Final score: 7-5 for Orono. On Sunday, November 1, Pickering came to Orono for another 3:30 game. Orono's goalie Troy Webster played an outstanding game in net. Pickering started the scoring off in the end of the first period. Orono's Konarowski passed the puck up to Brady Burns who then slid past both opposing defenceman managing to hit the top corner for Orono's only goal of the game. Pickering went on to score three more points in the second for a final score of 4-1 for Pickering. Upcoming schedule for Orono: November 8th @ 3:30 pm, Bradford in Orono; Saturday, November 14 @ 9 pm, Orono in Pickering; and Sunday, November 15th @ 3:30 pm, East Gwillimbury in Orono. Newcastle BOWLING NEWCASTLE SENIORS Bowling Top Scores 150 + over for Oct. 27th GAME ONE BOWLER GAME TWO Major atom Leafs 3-1 on season by Esther Sims Saturday, October 24 saw the Major Atom Leafs house league team take to the ice at home versus Clarington 6. Josh Hill started in net. Clarington scored a quick goal but Josh wasn't shaken. The Leafs were looking a little scattered as they adjusted to some position and line changes for this game. Evan Vey tied the game with his one man effort from his own blue line. Caught on a line change a minute later, Clarington scored to take the lead to end the first period. Josh stayed alert making a great low glove save late in the second before Kevin Gough took over between the pipes. With just seconds remaining, Clarington scored to go up by two. Facing some physical play, the Leafs kept their cool and focused on the task at hand. John Feddema scored for Orono about two minutes into the third. Matthew Caudle worked hard on the wing, and after some great effort in front of the net, Lucas Iantomasi scored with assists from Ethan Lock and Jacob Beauparlant. Clarington came back with a top shelf goal seven seconds later to make it a 4-3 game. Lucas scored as only he does -- on a breakaway -- to tie it up with 2:58 remaining. With less than a minute left, John Sims saw Feddema coming on the ice and passed him the puck. Feddema completed the breakaway play by scoring the game winner with 47 seconds left on the clock. All team members are proud of their 30 start to the season. On Friday, October 30, the Major Atoms house league team travelled to Courtice to play Clarington 3. Coach Dolley had some players trying out new positions again this game. Cameron Hill played a strong game on defence. Clarington opened the scoring early in the first. John Feddema scored at about the half-way mark of the first and Courtice followed up with a second goal just over a minute later. Kevin Gough made two outstanding glove saves to keep Orono ahead. Then Ethan Lock scored to put the Leafs up by two. Clarington came back in the last four minutes to tie the game at 3 at the end of the first. Continuing their momentum, Clarington scored three more within two minutes of each other to go up 6-3. Feddema scored his third of the game before the period ended, then scored his fourth of the game early in the third to start Orono's comeback drive. Evan Vey scored with help from John Sims and Lucas Iantomasi. Josh Hill made a great pad save to keep the Leafs in it. Iantomasi scored with 2:58 left to tie the game at 7, but Clarington followed up with the go-ahead goal to serve the Leafs their first loss of the year.
