With the 2010 municipal election still 10 months away, a number of residents have already registered as candidates. Courtice Regional Councillor Mary Novak submitted her nomination papers on the first possible day for filing, January 4th. Novak will seek to be re-elected in the position she currently holds, Regional Councillor for Ward 1 and 2. Ron Hooper filed his papers on January 5th, for the position he was first elected to in 2006, Local Councillor for Ward 2, Bowmanville. On Monday, January 11th, Local Courtice Councillor Adrian Foster declared his intention to seek the Mayor's position. Foster held his current seat for two terms. Courtice resident Mark Stanisz filed nomination papers the same day for the position currently held by Foster. Local Ward 4 Councillor Gord Robinson filed his papers on Monday as a candidate for the Regional seat for Ward 3 and 4, the position currently held by Councillor Charlie Trim. Robinson was elected as Local Ward 4 Councillor in 2000. Three candidates have filed papers for the two Public School Board Trustee positions available in Clarington. Incumbents Cathy Abraham of Newcastle and Steven Cooke of Bowmanville are seeking re-election. Courtice resident Marie Visser has also declared her intention to seek a public school board trustee position. Potential candidates have until September 9 to file their nomination papers with the Clarington Clerk's Department. A filing fee of $200 for Mayor's position, and $100 for all other positions must accompany nomination papers. The fee will be refunded if candidates withdraw their papers, win the election or receive two percent of the vote. All Clarington residents, 18 years of age or older who are citizens of Canada may run in the municipal election.
