Beloved wife of John Murphy (deceased). Treasured mother of Charles (Carol), Andy (Sandra), Marjorie McColm, (Harold), Jerry (Jackie), and Pat Picherack (Paul). Devoted grandmother of Tony (Debra), Larry, Theresa McVean, Mary Hill (Chris), Michael, Kathleen Quinn (Stuart), Virginia DiRoma (Michael), Patrick, Erin Monahan (Sieth), Mathew, Martina King (Bryon), Bert, and great grandmother to Ada, Emma, Elise, and Olivia. Joan was predeceased by her infant son Patrick and her sisters Margery and Esmé and will be sadly missed by her brother John and sister Pat. Joan was an extraordinary volunteer in her community and church and gave generously of her time and energy. She was a founding member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, the first president of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Women's League, a member of Clarington Library Board, the local Catholic School Board and Community Care. She was a farmer for forty five years in Starkville. Friends were received at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights) on Monday, March 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass was held at ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 214 King Ave. E., Newcastle, on Tuesday, March 30, at 11:00 a.m. Spring interment, Lakeview Cemetery. Donations in Joan's memory to the St. Francis of Assisi Mortgage Reduction Fund or Clarington Community Care would be appreciated by her family. Sister of Arnold Weirmeir (Ruby) and predeceased by nine brothers and one infant sister. Special aunt to Martin Manders and his wife Nadi. Missed by many other nieces and nephews.
