MIXED LEAGUE Thursdays 7 - 9 pm by Doug Henderson The Orono Juvenile team hosted the first two games of the O.M.H.A Finals against Essex on Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st . For the opening ceremony, Mayor Jim Abernethy dropped the puck for the two team captains. Next, the crowd had the pleasure of the Canadian national anthem sung by Amanda Dolley. In the first game of the weekend, neither team put any points on the board until the third period. The start of the third had Orono coming out of the dressing room to put 2 points on the board. Brock McGill scored within the first minute of the period, assisted by Tyler Armstrong and Aaron Baker. The next point went to EUCHRE RESULTS DURHAM COUNTY SENIORS EUCHRE APRIL 5TH RESULTS TOP SCORES Brady Burns, assisted by Tom Meester and Josh Rekker. Troy Webster earned the first shut out of the series. The second game started with both sides playing the puck but neither finding the back of the opponent's net, until Orono's Trevor Munce managed the first point of the game assisted by Tim Kay. Orono scored again within three minutes, this time with the point going to Greg Konarowski assisted by Brad Nicholl. In the second period, Aaron Baker slammed one in unassisted, and then Essex answered that goal with one of their own just 20 seconds later. Orono went on to score 2 more points in the second: Jeremy Caruana assisted by Tom Meester and Justin Devouge, and a lone goal by Cody Graham. The Orono team finished the game defensively, allowing the Essex team to put only 1 point on the board in the third, giving Orono a 5 - 2 win. On Saturday, March 27th Orono made their way to Essex for the third game of the 3-outof-5 series. The Orono team was ready and started the game off with a point earned by Dana Law, assisted by Trevor Munce and Brad Nicholl. Essex scored one of their own to leave the first period a 1-1 tie. In the second period, Tyler Neil scored twice: the first assisted by Brad Nicholl and Dana Law, with the second goal being unassisted. For the third period, Orono's Sam Jackson started the scoring off assisted by Jeremy Caruana. Tyler Neil followed that up with 2 more for a great hat trick plus 1. Tyler's goals were both assisted by Trevor Munce. Troy Webster played a strong series. This is the first time an Orono Juvenile team has won an OMHA title, following two previous attempts in 2002 and 2007. The coaching staff Paul Rosseau, Rick Howe, Gary Graham, Tyler Robinson and Doug Henderson would like to thank the fans and some of the local businesses in the community for all their support. A special thanks to Sheri Howe for her dedication in raising money for the team with the weekly 50/50 draws. In keeping with tradition, the Orono Junvenile team will be riding the fire trucks down Main Street on Sunday, April 11th at 3 o'clock. Everyone is invited to come out and join the team members in celebrating their win. A final game was held to determine the winner of the consolation round and unfortunately, Orono came up short losing 5-2. One of the highlights of the consolation round was a game against Beaverton. Due to the Canada-US Olympic hockey game and some injuries, Orono travelled with 7 skaters and a goalie. With the gold medal game playing in the lobby, Beaverton came on the ice with Canada jerseys for the warm-up. When Canada scored the game winner in overtime, the game stopped, the boys on both sides banged their sticks and everyone cheered. Now that's hockey in Canada! During the game, Orono worked hard with only 2 defense and 5 offense. James Gough, Adrian Jacobs, Kyle Cordes, Justin Badour and Zach Sinclair all played hard offensively with few breaks. Matthew Haass played the entire game and Mark Brydson played all but a couple of shifts on defense. As always, Garrett Kealy was outstanding in net. Special thanks goes out to the team sponsor, Newcastle Funeral Home. Also, thanks to Dennis Jacobs, Leanne Kealy, Darin Cordes, Rob Sinclair, and Duane Knoblauch. 1st Walt Mitchell 2nd Doris Falls 3rd Helen Mackey 4th Jane Tomlinson (tie) Liz Reynders 89 84 79 76 76 Anne Arsenault 154 Bernice Westerlink Cathy Holmes Del Lancaster- Forget Joan Moffat Lisa Janveaux Marilyn Major 184 Mary Pierik 154 Shirley Moffat Susan Lee Tina Schuh 154 Val Witheridge 167 207 164 154 153 152 189 165 187 152 165 219 168 50/50 winner: Bernice Westerink REBEKAH HALL EUCHRE RESULTS FOR MAR.31ST TOP SCORES NEWCASTLE YOUTH BOWLING LEAGUE 1st Mae Tabb 2nd Helen Mackey (tie) Kathy Mitchell 4th Ina Smith 80 79 77 79 SPECIAL CARDS Walt Mitchell, Joan Sutcliffe MOST LONE HANDS(tie) Joyce Cowan, Mary Henderson, Helen Mackey, Ina Smith - 4 The Orono Weekly Times wishes to thank all of our volunteer sports writers who have reported on our local teams over the season.
