Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 5 Art student's exceptional art by Ann Harley A display of 6 pieces and a self-portrait by 17-year-old Caroline Van Halteren, a grade 12 student at Durham Christian High School demands attention from the walls at A Gift of Art in Newcastle. A horse enthusiast, Caroline has been drawing horses since she could hold a pencil. She rides English and has a white Arabian, "Adorum," a gelding, standing 15.3-hands high. His portrait has been created many times, but she also has portraits of other horses, two of which are hanging in the Newcastle gallery until the end of May. Among the collection at A Gift of Art is a pencil drawing of her grandfather as a child in Holland. Caroline used an old photo taken of her grandfather about 70 years ago to produce this work and gave it to him for his recent 80th birthday. Two other works are contrasts: works in which one part enhances the other by contrast. The one piece entitled "Home" is a father holding a child in a casual but comfortable embrace, a contented outlook. The contrast is an inset of a soldier in desert battle fatigues, holding his weapon in a solitary posture, on edge, scanning the Caroline Van Halteren of Durham Christian High School is the featured high school artist of the month at A Gift of Art in Newcastle. future. "Found" the second contrast work is a man being kissed, a look of quiet happiness pervades, while the contrast is a female in the melted position of complete dejection and sadness. Caroline feels that both pieces emit the idea that "we belong with our family". This young artist has worked in pencil until recently when she began entering and enjoying the impact of colour. She is now using acrylics and pastels. Caroline finds "everything beautiful in this life and likes to be able to portray that beauty through her drawings". She thinks it is "cool" that different people see something different in her drawings other than her original intention. Caroline is also an accomplished musician and composer. She plays the flute, piano and is currently learn- ing both guitar and bass. This young woman terms the music she writes, "reflective". She tries to express her faith through her art, both in her paintings and in her music. Her exhibition will be on display at A Gift of Art at 20 Robert St. W., Newcastle, 905-987-2264 until May 31.
