Wednesday, May 26, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 9 Freezie bandit at Clarke High School by Maggie Savage Co-op Student There's a thief at Clarke High School and gym teacher Mr. Gillan wants the student to fess up and apologize, after all he has done for that student. A few years back Mr. Gillan decided to start treating his fitness and gym classes to freezies once the weather started to get nice, and he called it Freezie Friday. After every gym/fitness class on Fridays, he would treat his students to jumbo freezies. Due to Mr. Gillan's kindness he allowed students who were not in his regularly scheduled classes, to join his grade-11 gym class. On Friday, May 14th, the grade-11 gym class had about eight extra students join. After running for six minutes and playing lacrosse, he treated all the students to a jumbo freezie, after class, which is stored in Clarke's Food and Nutrition classroom freezer. While all the students were enjoying their weekly freezies, one of the extra students (whose name cannot be released) stole a whole box of frozen freezies from the Food and Nutrition room, which he then sold for cash profit at the school's smokers section (located by Harvey's Restaurant), between third-period break and fourth-period class, according to the information given to Mr. Gillan by a small group of the smokers. On Monday, May 17th, while outside on Clarke's field, Mr. Gillan sadly announced to his gym class, "There's a good chance that there will not be a Freezie Friday this week (May 21st), because the thief stole a whole box of frozen freezies from Mrs. Stone's classroom." Just after announcing that to his gym class, Mr. Gillan spotted the thief in the smokers section with a group of smokers. He then went after the thief, who ran away and hid in the backyard of Clarke's only neighbour (north of the school), he reported. Mr. Gillan asked the group at the smokers section if they had seen the thief, but all said they did not see him, according to Mr. Gillan. Eye-witnesses (grade-11 gym students) told Mr. Gillan they could clearly see the thief running away and hiding from him. "I feel used. I saved him from getting expelled, let him join my gym class, gave him a freezie, and this is how he thanks me," Mr. Gillan explained to his grade-11 gym class. "I'm hurt!" Students in his fitness and gym classes were very angry to hear the story and wanted something done but, until the thief fesses up, there is nothing Mr. Gillan can do. Mr. Gillan did, however, purchase more freezies because he felt that his students should not suffer. And he still allows students on spare (no class that period) -except the thief -- to join his classes, even after all that has happened. Ever since the incident, Mrs. Stone, teacher of the Food and Nutrition Classroom, has been on high alert, making sure no one is stealing the freezies. On Wednesday, May 19th one of Mr. Gillan's grade-11 gym students, Christina Day, went to get the freezies for him after class, due to it being a student's birthday. Mrs. Stone questioned Christina to make sure she was not stealing the freezies, Christina explained to Mr. Gillan and the class. Although no punishment has been given to the thief, Mr. Gillan assured the Times that he will find the thief and make sure the student receives punishment and apologizes to him personally.
