Wednesday, June 9, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Opinion by Roger Yates, P.Eng. Wind farms are safe, environmentally benign There is a lot of misinformation around regarding wind farms so I wish to try and provide some clarity. Since 2002, I have been involved as an engineer (not a developer) in the wind energy business. Wind farms are: · safe · environmentally benignunlike nuclear or fossil fuels · economical over the long term as seen in multi technology RfP's where wind took a majority of the share · quiet if sited appropriately · attractive, in my opinion, but that is a subjective view The best scientific and medical information I've seen clearly indicates that impacts from wind farms are very manageable with conscientious project development. Of course, people opposed to wind power, will use all kinds of issues to rationalize their point: visual (that's very much a personal viewpoint); noise; shadow flicker, impact on wildlife (birds and bats Members of the Newcastle Historical Society gathered around the computer to identify people in some of the old movies and pictures in the Society's archives recently. Pictured left to right: Ron Locke, Doreen McNevin (standing), Pauline Storkes, and Jean Rickard. primarily), light pollution all of which can be managed by appropriate site design etc. etc. I do have a large and impartial report of noise which I will share with anyone interested. A few facts: · the US National Audubon Society, a naturalist organi- zation, as well as Sierra Club, David Suzuki Foundation, not only support wind energy but URGE rapid implementation as one of the few things we can actually do to fight climate change · Similarly, Greenpeace cam- paigns FOR wind farms such as Cape Wind in the US. · While a wind turbine may kill 1 or 2 birds per year, high rise buildings in Toronto kill 10,000 birds per year. · The 550 metre (1,800 foot) set back in Ontario is, I believe, one of the largest set backs in the world.
