10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, July 7, 2010 Staying in Touch MPP John O'Toole Royal Couple Completes Canadian Visit in Toronto Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip are on their 22nd tour of Canada. This week, they will be in Waterloo and Toronto. The itinerary for Toronto on Sunday, July 4, includes a visit to St. James Cathedral in the morning and the Queen's Plate in the afternoon. On July 5, there was a tour of Research in Motion (RIM) in Waterloo. This company is the maker of the famous BlackBerry devices. The RIM visit is to be followed by: a tour and luncheon at Pinewood Studios; presentations of gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards and an official dinner. The departure day on July 6 included presentations of medals for good citizenship at the Ontario Legislature. Outside Queen's Park, the Queen was to unveil a special plaque commemorating the 150th anniversary of the dedication of Queen's Park in 1860 by her great-grandfather, The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. Prior to their departure from the Pearson International Airport, the Queen and Prince Philip were scheduled to view the new coat of arms and badge for the Canada Border Services Agency. As this column is being written, I look forward to joining Ontario MPPs at the luncheon held in honour of Her Majesty hosted by the Province of Ontario in Toronto July 5. Input Invited for Offshore Wind Turbines The province of Ontario is seeking public input into proposed rules for off-shore wind turbines. Among the rules suggested is a requirement that the turbines be at least five kilometers from the shoreline. The shoreline exclusion area would be comparable with many U.S. states bordering the Great Lakes. In addition, the Ministry of Natural Resources is undertaking a review of Ontario's current process for making Crown land available for off-shore wind projects. The Province is also proposing developers follow a comprehensive application process that includes addressing impacts including: Crown land users, endangered and threatened species, wildlife, flooding and erosion. The proposal is being posted online at the province's Environmental Registry for a total of 60 days. The Environmental Registry is www.ebr.gov.on.ca . Entering the Registry Number 011-0089 will take you directly to the page that gives further details and allows you to comment online. Look for additional public and industry consultations starting in the fall of this year. Dates and locations will soon be available at www.ontario.ca. Frankly, I find it inconsistent that the government allows land-based wind farms to be less than a kilometer from homes and private property, but is proposing a five-kilometer buffer between the wind turbines and the shore. Why doesn't Premier McGuinty examine what is being done in countries such as Denmark and follow their example? I would encourage citizens to take the time to comment on the wind turbine proposals for offshore and Crown land locations. I would appreciate being copied on your comments.
