Wednesday, September 22, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 3 ELECTION Continued from front not operating properly. Woo explained that the approval of the incinerator was not an unanimous decision by Clarington council. According to Woo, the Region has not yet signed the contract with Covanta, and the Ministry of the Environment has not yet signed the incinerator environmental assessment, "If I am elected regional councillor, and the incinerator is still on the table, I am going to stop it," he stated. "My position on the incinerator has been very clear," Woo said. "I am opposed to incineration, it is not sustainable." Incineration will release a large amount of contaminants into the air, of which only five will be monitored, according to Woo. Clarington's compromised air shed was not taken into consideration in the decision to site the incinerator in Courtice, he said. Robinson who had consistently voted against the incinerator in Clarington council, but changed his position in May of 2009, said Clarington did not have a say in the incinerator, "That decision was made at the Regional level." Robinson said. He claimed he voted in favour of Clarington becoming a willing host community for the incinerator, for the serviced industrial land the Region promised Clarington in exchange for its `willing host' status. Robinson said he supports incineration over landfill because "we can control what goes up the stack, not what goes in the ground." Robinson also said he got as many calls from constituents opposed to landfill as he received from those who were against inciner- ation. On a question about future GO service to the area, Robinson said the transit system needs to be expanded with commuter parking lots along the route. According to Woo, the GO train expansion to Bowmanville will be an economic driver for Clarington, But there needs to be connectivity between the Durham Region Transit system and the GO train, Woo said. All the candidates were asked who they would support for the next Regional Chair. Former Clarington mayor John Mutton has declared himself a candidate for the position, when it is put to a vote in December. It is assumed current chair Roger Anderson will seek re-election. Woo said he would not support former mayor John Mutton for Regional Chair. Robinson said he would not support John Mutton "at this time." Novak said, "To be honest with you, I don't think I will be supporting John Mutton." McCulloch said he would look at all the candidates but he would not be supporting Mutton or Anderson. MacArthur responded to the question by saying he would look over the full slate of candidates and vote for the candidate most qualified for the job. In the time allotted for closing statements, Robinson said he was proud of our community and urged the electorate to vote for experience, "Vote Gord Robinson for your voice for Ward 3 and 4. Let's work together." Woo said he has taken the sacred trust the voters have placed in him and served with high values. "Willie Woo will work for you," he said.
