Wednesday, September 29, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 5 Newcastle sports a new slogan by Judith Clapperton One of the ways communities promote themselves is by having a slogan that depicts the culture and character of the community. This slogan or tagline may appear on websites, in advertisements, and on signs and usually helps readers to identify with the community and, hopefully, draws them in to visit. In May, Newcastle's Business Improvement Association (BIA) and Chamber of Commerce jointly decided to organize a contest to create a new slogan to help in marketing the Village. When organizers of the contest first met, they realized that no one knows the Village better than those who live here or routinely visit. They decided the community-wide contest would be called Who, What, Why. Residents and visitors were encouraged to submit a tagline of six words or less that describes Newcastle to the world at large. The contest received a tremendous response with over 100 entries. It was interesting to the organizing committee to discover that entries predominantly covered two themes: pride in the village's history and a belief that once you visit, you'll want to return. Entries reflected a SLOGAN see page 6 Jacob Vanhaverbeke was playing guitar as part of Culture Days Canada celebrated at A Gift of Art in Newcastle Friday afternoon.
