8 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, September 29, 2010 Durham Region Health Department Celebrating world breastfeeding week Durham Region Health Department will celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, Oct. 1 to 7. World Breastfeeding Week is an annual event initiated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, a global network of organizations and individuals working to support, promote and protect breastfeeding. This year, the Health Department is encouraging mothers-to-be to learn about breastfeeding before their baby is born. "By knowing what to expect and planning ahead, new mothers may be more successful at breastfeeding," explained Liz Calvin, a public health nurse with the Health Department. "Knowing what the signs of successful breastfeeding are and knowing when and where to get help before her baby is born, can increase a new mother's confidence and make all the difference." To help prepare and encourage new mothers to breastfeed, the Health Department is offering a new Prenatal Breastfeeding Package as well as new resources online, where instructional videos showing how to breastfeed are available. In addition to the website, mothers can also access other resources through the Health Department's Durham Health Connection Line. "Through our telephone help line, public health nurses are available to help mothers better understand their baby's needs, helping new mothers to breastfeed with confidence right from the start," explained Ms. Calvin. "Research shows that most women can breastfeed and make enough milk for their babies. However, for some moms, breastfeeding is not always easy. We want to remind mothers that breastfeeding is a normal, natural process and is the best way to feed their baby for the first two years of life and beyond."
