10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, October 27, 2010 O'TOOLE Continued from pg 2 Dalton McGuinty. Ten other cabinet ministers haven't posted expenses, either. There isn't a single expense posted by the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs, Ministry of International Trade and Development, and Ministry of Small Business and Consumer Services. The latest scathing report from the Auditor General is essentially a sequel to the billion-dollar waste uncovered at eHealth. Despite assurances that the McGuinty government would put a stop to this waste, Premier McGuinty has failed to do so. In fact, the waste continues. It is time to ensure every dollar intended for frontline healthcare is not swallowed up in the healthcare bureaucracy. It's time to hold a public inquiry to find out where the money went and what can be done to prevent this scandalous waste of tax dollars from happening again. The real solution here is more open and accessible government. Province Must Act to Protect Aquifer A number of Scugog residents have brought to my attention their concerns over materials contained in fill that is being dumped at a site on Lakeridge Rd. As you may know from recent media reports, Scugog Township revoked the permit for this operation after soil samples failed to meet provincial standards for clean fill. I am concerned over the impacts on the aquifers that provide drinking Church Directory Reverend Ceri Rees 111 Church St. N. 905-485-5502 orono.uc@rogers.com Orono United Church Rev. This area is protected under the Oak Ridges Moraine legislation. We spoke, and I wrote Ontario's Environment Minister as soon as I was made aware of the problems. I will be following up this week with further inquiries to the Minister of the Environment. This situation is not acceptable. Government's Photo ID Cards Delayed Two Years Constituents often ask me how they can obtain government-issued photo identity cards when they don't have a driver's licence. These cards are important for many seniors who no longer drive, for disabled persons who cannot become drivers, and indeed for anyone who doesn't have a driver's licence. It was pointed out in the Ontario Legislature last week that photo cards were promised two years ago, but they are still not available. According to the Transportation Minister, an announcement is expected soon. But, after a wait of two years, it's not soon enough. Will Going Green Increase Property Assessment? Municipalities and indeed many individual property owners want to know whether the installation of green technology such as wind turbines, solar collectors or geothermal heating and cooling systems will mean an increase in property assessment. I have recently received clarification fin a letter from Ontario's Minister of Finance. He indicates that the Assessment Act has been amended to ensure the machinery and equipment used by residents and businesses to generate their own electricity will not be subject to property tax. As a result, the panels used in solar energy along with turbines and blades are exempt. If, however, the land is used for the purpose of commercial electricity generation, the Minister indicates that the land will be taxed at the industrial rate.
