10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, November 10, 2010 Staying in Touch MPP John O'Toole Legislation Seeks full Recognition Of Remembrance Day in Ontario There's growing support for declaring Remembrance Day a statutory holiday in Ontario. Legislation introduced by MPP Lisa MacLeod at Queen's Park last week calls for Ontario to join the majority of Canadian provinces who already recognize Canada's national day of mourning and remembrance. Ontario's provincial offices are closed November 11, but there is no full statutory holiday. Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec are currently the only provinces where Remembrance Day is not recognized as a statutory holiday MPP Lisa MacLeod reminded the Ontario legislature last week that November 11 deserves to be a full public holiday in recognition of the great sacrifices made in support of Canada's freedom and peace. Her Bill calls on schools to hold Remembrance Day services the day before November 11. The Bill also proposes that the Family Day holiday be discontinued in favor of full recognition of Remembrance Day on November 11. Whenever fallen Canadian soldiers are repatriated via the Highway of Heroes, there is always an outpouring of support. It is my honour this week to represent the Province of Ontario at memorial services, and many other acts of Remembrance throughout Durham Riding. It is always encouraging to see the strong turnout at local cenotaphs by citizens of all ages. In my view, more Ontarians want an opportunity to pay their respects on November 11. The declaration of a statutory holiday would allow greater participation in acts of remembrance and support for all who serve. Lisa MacLeod's Bill would ensure Remembrance Day is given the status it deserves in honouring the fallen and also recognizing Canada's great military traditions that ensure our freedoms and values are never taken for granted and always defended. I will support the Remembrance Day Bill. With backing from MPPs on both sides of the House, perhaps the legislation recognizing Remembrance Day as a full statutory holiday could be enacted in time for Remembrance Day 2011. The one condition is the exchange of the Family Day proclaimed by Premier McGuinty. ServiceOntario Centres Include Health Card Service As of mid-October, driver and vehicle licencing offices in Port Perry, Uxbridge and Bowmanville are also offering routine health card services. These changes are intended to give residents access to more routine government services that better meet customer needs. The ServiceOntario centres are located at 100 King St. E., in Bowmanville; 72 Water St., in Port Perry; and 278 Main St. N. (Unit 1), in Uxbridge. I am interested in hearing your views on this service delivery model. Ontario's Second Year of Federal Transfer Payments November 3 was a sad day for Ontario as the province observed its second anniversary as a province needing federal transfer payments. Over the past year, the hand-out in equalization payments Ontario gets from the federal government has tripled. Ontario's equalization payments from Ottawa have risen from $347 million last year to $972 million this year. There are 68,000 more people on welfare rolls since Ontario became a have-not province. Ontario families know they need to live within their means, but this province's punishing taxes, record breaking deficits and debt and high unemployment means Ontario will continue to rely on transfer payments and families will continue to struggle to make ends meet. Ontario was once the economic engine of Canada. However, we have gone from first to worst. The trend will continue unless we get off the current path.
