Financial Literacy in School Curriculum Next Year In September of 2011, students from grades 4 to 12 will learn money management skills, including saving, spending and investing. Consultation into the nature of the curriculum included an online survey of parents, students, school boards, educators, stakeholder groups and interested members of the public. The Ministry of Education says it will attempt to enhance financial literacy by teaching the concept throughout the existing curriculum. This means there is no plan for a specific course. However, by next September there will be more supports for financial literacy topics across the curriculum. Ontario Extends Veterans' Licence Plate Program Ontario is honouring the courage and sacrifice of veterans by adding a motorcycle plate to the veterans' licence plate program. Veterans' plates for motorcycles will be available in spring 2011. Special plates are already available for cars and trucks to qualified veterans, including veterans of World Ward Two and the Korean War, peacekeeping missions and those who have served three or more years with the Canadian regular forces. Veterans can exchange their current plates or obtain a veteran licence plate. The Royal Canadian Legion provides verification of the veteran's service record. This requires a $5 fee to cover the Legion's administrative costs. Ontarians can also order a "Support Our Troops" graphic for licence plates. In this case the regular fee for graphic licence plates applies. FOURTH YEAR OF EXTENDED DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME Sunday, November 7, marked the end of the fourth year of extended Daylight Saving Time in Ontario. Extended DST is a provision of the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005. Changing the beginning and end of Daylight Saving Time was seen as a way to conserve oil and reduce electricity consumption. The Act changed the start and end dates of DST effective in 2007. (Ontario adopted a matching policy in January 2007.) Daylight Saving time now starts three weeks earlier (On the second Sunday in March) and ends one week later (The first Sunday in November.)
