Wednesday, November 24, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Santa Claus and all his merry helpers visited Newcastle! A large crowd braved the cold November wind on Sunday evening to watch the 6th Annual Newcastle Santa Claus Parade as it made its way down King Avenue. EFW Continued from front sign the final agreement with Covanta, the details of which, Regional Councillors have not seen. Anderson claims there are penalties spelled out in the agreement if he does not sign the contract when the Ministry gives approval of the EA. Since the terms of the contract are confidential, councillors do not know if indeed the Region faces penalties and if so, how much the penalties would be. The fact that a non-elected Chair of the Region is sit- ting with a contract nobody knows the details of is reason enough for Clarington to get out of the Region, according to one man at Monday night's Durham CLEAR meeting. The best thing anyone can do at this stage, according to meeting organizers, and Clarington's Mayor Elect, Adrian Foster, who spoke at the meeting, is to put pressure on Chair Anderson and all Regional Councillors to urge Anderson not to sign the Covanta Contract. In April 2009, Durham Region selected Covanta, to build and operator the EFW for the next 35 years. The question was asked at the meeting as to what role Mutton played in getting the Region to select Covanta as the preferred incinerator vendor. Mutton said as a consultant for Covanta he put together the technical aspects of the contract. "That is what I do," he stated. He said he left Covanta 16 months ago, of his own accord because he did not believe in the project. "I did not want to see it come to Durham Region or Clarington," he stated. If there are indeed penalties to be levied against the Region if Anderson does not sign the contract at the earliest opportunity, those penalties would still be cheaper than operating an EFW for the next 35 years using all of the Region's Federal Gas Tax subsidy, according to Kerry Meydam, another anti-incinerator activist, who said she would be willing to tape herself to a tree at the Courtice site if necessary to stop the incinerator. "The public has done an awful lot, we made a difference in this decision, and we can still make a difference," she stated. "We just have to stop it." ~ Happenings ~ Thursday, November 25, 2010 - Orono Horticultural Society Potluck Supper, Annual Meeting and Christmas Show, 6:30 pm, Orono United Church.
