Wednesday, December 8, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 7 Orono Juvies edge Alumni by Tyler Knight Under an overcast sky with a light snow falling, a group of men made a rather familiar trek to Station Street Sunday, through the lobby, and down the hallway they have all walked hundreds of times before. Into a dressing room, telling stories and lies of glory days past, they again pull over the familiar sweater they grew up wearing. A few years older, a few pounds heavier, and a few hairs lighter, the Orono Juvenile Alumni team prepared for a game with the current Orono Juvenile squad. There was an air of confidence surrounding the elder team as they were victorious last year against their junior counterparts. With the warm ups and introductions finished and a team picture taken, the two clubs lined up on their respective blue lines for a ceremonial face-off. From your current Juvies, Captain Cody Graham, and representing the Alumni, 99-00 Provincial Champion Captain Tyler Robinson, leaned over the dot while Gord Lowery, grandfather of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association, dropped the disc. With the pleasantries exchanged it was time to play hockey. photo submitted The Orono Juvenile Alumni team, back row (L-R): Rick Howe Sr. (Trainer), Tyler Knight, Tyler Robinson, Cam James, Derek Heerschop, Scotty Wood, Jim Knight (Coach), Mark McAllister, Chris Fields, Zack Ibbotson, John Stafford, Adam Cryderman. Front row (L-R): Greg Howe, Jamie Parry, Rick Howe Jr., Aaron Robinson, Dusty Stapleton, Pete Heerschop, Dave "Chuck" Norrish, Scotty Henderson. From the opening draw it was a fast paced game, and the scoring started early. The Juvies' Zach Graham opened the scoring, with assists going to Mitch Handcock and Tommy Meester. The old guard, not to be out done, tallied shortly after with Greg Howe finding the twine with help from Scotty Henderson and Dave "Chuck" Norrish. With the first period behind them, the Alumni came out strong when two former Orono Captains, Tyler Robinson and Tyler Knight, set up Adam Cryderman for his first of two markers. The younger, fresher legs of the currents Leaf team took advantage of their elder foes and added a pair of goals coming from Kyle Sullivan and Brett Brown. With the Alumni down 32 entering the third period, Cryderman quickly banged in his second goal with help from Tyler Knight. The Alumni then took the lead shortly after, on a goal by Ricky Howe with helpers to John Stafford and Scotty Wood. This would be the final goal for the Alumni as Captain Coady Graham of the Juveniles scored two minutes later, and potted the winner at 6:03 of the third. With their goalie Dusty Stapleton pulled, the Alumni made it a hectic few minutes trying to tie the contest, but were unsuccessful as your Orono Leafs held on for the victory. Alumni coach, and winner of the $61 50/50 draw, Jim Knight said of his club, "We had better find some practice time before next year!" Although defeated, there was a great sense of pride in the Alumni room afterwards, and nothing but best wishes and good luck to the current boys who don the Orono Leaf on their chests. But just be ready for next year fellas. Juveniles back in the win column by Gary Graham The Orono Juveniles are back in the win column after besting the East Gwillimbury Juvenile Team on Sunday, Nov. 28th, at the Sharon arena.
