6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, November 2, 2011 LOCAL SPORTS Newcastle BOWLING WEEKLY RESULTS A win and a loss for Orono Midgets by Ashley Bain The Orono Midget Leafs started their week off with a game in Omemee on Oct. 24. Orono was facing the Kawartha Coyotes for the first time. With the first period underway, Orono was looking good and was able to keep the Coyotes at bay for most of the first, until the Coyotes got their first goal on net. The score was 10 Coyotes going into the second. As the second period started, the Coyotes proved they weren't going to go easy on Orono, scoring another goal within a few minutes, making the score now 20. But Orono wasn't ready to give up and was able to get past the Coyotes' defense to score their first goal, making the score 2-1. Orono didn't have long to enjoy that goal, as the Coyotes scored their third goal within a minute of Orono's. With the third period starting and the score 3-1 Coyotes, it was Orono's last chance to get back in the game. But things just went down hill from there, as the Coyotes scored not one, but two goals in the first five minutes of the period, making the score 5-1 Coyotes. Orono was able to get in one more goal before the end of the game, making the final score 52 Coyotes. Colin Lamers and Ryan Bain scored Orono's two goals. Assists went to Lamers and Chris Haass. Orono played their usual Sunday home game hosting the Brock Wilds. It was only a week ago that Orono first played the Wilds in Beaverton, losing the game 3-0. As the first period started, Orono wanted nothing more than to claim their first victory. With some great passes, Orono was able to get around Brock, scoring not only one goal but two, making the score 2-0 Orono. But Brock wasn't ready to give up, scoring a goal with less then five minutes left of the period, making the score now 2-1. The second period held many opportunities for both teams to score but it seemed that neither could get one in, leaving the score at 2-1 for Orono going into the third. With the third period underway, Orono wanted to keep their lead and Brock wanted to catch up. With less than ten minutes on the clock, Orono was able to seal their win with a goal from the blue line, making the final score 3-1 Orono. Congrats to the boys on their first victory of the season. Chris Haass (2) and Tyler Meijer scored Orono's three goals, with assists going to Mitch Vanschydel, Connor Hegan and Colin Lamers.
