10 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, January 11, 2012 Clarington Museums and Archives Robbie Burns dinner at Orono Town Hall On January 21st, the 4th Annual Robbie Burns Dinner will be held at the Orono Town Hall. Robbie Burns Dinners are held in honour of the national poet of Scotland, Robbie Burns. He was born on January 25th, 1759, into the family of a peasant farmer in southwest Scotland. His poetry is much loved throughout the world today and celebrates love, sociable drinking and other fine Scottish traditions. Many of our original settlers in Clarke Township came from Scotland and historically have enjoyed the tradition of celebrating Robbie Burns' birthday each year. Clarington Museums and Archives is pleased to bring this exciting event to Orono as a fundraiser for the museum. In the fine tradition of a Robbie Burns dinner, there will be an Ode to the Immortal Memory of Robbie Burns and a traditional Scottish meal of neeps (turnips), tatties (potatoes), haggis and roast beef. Following dinner, enjoy live entertainment, including the live fiddle music of Saskia Tomkins, highland dances and bagpipes and drums. Tickets are only $40.00 each. All proceeds from the Robbie Burns Dinner support Clarington Museums and Archives. Tickets are available from Orono Times office and Clarington Museums and Archives. For more information or to book your tickets, call the museum office at 905-6232734. Call Un-bearable I waited all year for 2011 to end, and only 10 days into 2012 and I am already sick of it. By-laws are soon to be the number one issue. Since you can't have chickens in town, I moved mine a half mile out and built a nice little lean-to over on the Crown Land property. A bad choice or rotten luck, one or the other. When the warm spell came last week, a bear came out of hibernation and tore the chicken coop down and ate the chickens. Even though there were lots of fish in the creek, he ate my chickens. I see lots of bear signs but no bears along the walkways, even though I have been looking heavily armed with a long-gun, a revolver and a knife. These by-laws have made my edge awfully thin. This warm weather is something else. We sit on the bench in the village wondering what the world is coming to. Everyone is saying we will pay, wait and see. But I think we will be baling hay again in a week or so if the weather holds. The loss of the chickens has been very unsettling. For two days I sat on the bench chewing tobacco and spitting. Is there a by-law against spitting on the sidewalk? I hope not. I made a few resolutions at Christmas time and they carried over until the New Year, but only just. I had to go to a funeral up near Denby and a couple of the resolutions got broken. A guy that I knew for years died suddenly. He was a man who did a lot of mixed farming. He grew organic tobacco and vegetables and always had a pretty good mash that made a fine whiskey. The funeral was wonderful with lots of good smoke and whiskey after, but I sampled neither. The food was great and I think maybe I gained another ten. When I go to Denby, fishing and skidooing are the big things to do there, but no ice and no snow put that on hold. I am back on the bench and another nice day, maybe take another look for the bear and see if he has returned. I hope so. A bear rug would be nice. 905-623-6050 or 1-800-338-3397 Bethesda House REDUCE · REUSE RECYCLE
