Looking Back... Gleaned from past editions of the Orono Weekly Times 25 Years Ago.... The General Purpose Committee of the Town of Newcastle approved the designation of the Orono Town Hall as a historic property and the recommendation will now be presented to council for its approval...This designation has been sought on a number of occasions in the past...Also on Monday the committee gave similar approval for a designation to "The John Salker House" which is located on part lot 30 in the sixth concession of Clarke Township. The property is owned by David C. and Judith G. Climenhage. Mr. and Mrs Climenhage gave consent for the designation on May 22, 1986. There were no objections to the designation. 50 Years Ago.... The Orono Businessmen who have been staying open Saturday evenings came to an agreement on Monday that all stores in Orono will be closed on Saturday evenings. This will be in accordance with other Municipalities who have adopted this same procedure years ago. At this time it is understood that the Red & White and the IGA stores in Orono will be open this Saturday evening but will close the following Saturday at six o'clock. All other stores will close this Saturday in Orono, it is understood. 75 Years Ago.... The annual meeting of the Durham Central Agricultural Society was held in the Orange Hall on Wednesday, January 20th. The members of the Society assembled and the meeting was opened by an address from the President, Mr. Russell Osborne....The question of the charge in the admission to the Fair grounds was discussed. Moved by Mr. Staples, seconded by Mr. M.N. Allin that the admission be raised from .25¢ to .35¢. An amendment was put before the meeting by Mr. Wm. Armstrong, that the admission be raised to .35¢ with a change in the charge on the grandstand to .15¢ instead of the former .25¢ and that the children under 12 years of age be admitted free as was customary in previous years. A standing vote was taken at which the amendment was accepted and carried....Moved by Mr. M. H. Staples, seconded by Mr. O.W. Rolph, that September 21st and 22nd be the dates of the Fair for 1937.
