WINTERISBACK Continued from pg 2 shovelled snow in a t-shirt next to a thermometer showing minus 27 degrees Celsius, though only for the photo op that gave me bragging rights with my British relatives. This winter has actually put quite a ding in those bragging rights. Time was I could send a photo of me standing next to a 12-foot high pile of shovelled snow and get oohs and ahhs from my kith and kin in the old country. The last few winters have been a totally different experience. The whole of England has only two snow ploughs, so mild are their winters usually, and one of those ploughs was still in the plastic wrap it was delivered in when they had a bad one a couple of years ago. The chaos that ensued would have made Churchill weep, so it took the family quite a while to acclimatize before they could send me photos of themselves next to piles of shovelled snow. At which point I took pity on them and sent them all tuques. It looks like I might be on the losing end of the "my snow pile is bigger than your snow pile" rivalry again this year. I would love to say that I am a child of winter but the sad truth is my only winter sporting activity took place when I was 21-years old and went on an ill advised skiing trip with a girlfriend to Italy. The mountains were lovely and my girlfriend was an expert skier which made my tragic display of snow bunnyism look even more pathetic. After more than 20 attempts to take the button lift up as far as the top of the beginners' slope - all of which ended with me variously tangled up in the tow line, cross skied and hanging on for dear life, or fallen over on my side completely unable to get up again - the handsome ski instructor took pity on me and basically frog marched me up the hill. From there I slowly trickled down the first two-thirds, gathered speed for the final few yards and eventually collided with a fellow classmate who had made the trip downhill ahead of me. At this point I recused myself from all winter sports on the grounds that I was a menace to the public at large. With this season being the rollercoaster it has been so far, by the time you read this we will likely be in the plus seven Celsius range once more, so with that in mind, where did I store my Bermuda shorts? ~ Happenings ~ Sunday, January 29, 2012 - Pickering Military Show, 8am-12pm, Pickering Recreational Centre, 1867 Valleyfarm Rd.
