6 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, February 1, 2012 LocaL SportS Newcastle BOWLING SENIORS Bowling Orono Midgets trample Campbellford Colts in first round of playoff series by Ashley Bain CAMBELLFORD - With their season over, the Orono Midgets went into the first round of their playoffs facing the Campbellford Colts. In a best 3-out-of-5-games series, game one had Orono making the drive up to Campbellford. The game was a back and forth battle with great plays by both teams which left the final score tied at 2-2, forcing the game to go into overtime. With only 39 seconds left of the 10-minute overtime period, the Leafs were able to get one past the Colts, making the final score 3-2 and their ride home a happy one. Game two once again gave Campbellford the home advantage. Determined to keep their one-game lead, the Orono team came out of the gate ready to go. History repeated itself, with another final scored tied. But fate wasn't so kind to Orono this time, with a Campbellford goal two minutes into the overtime period, making the final score 2-1 Campbellford and the series tied at one win each. The Leafs were finally able to welcome the Colts to their home arena in game three. Even with the home advantage, Orono seemed to be absent for the first two periods, allowing Campbellford a 2-0 lead. But in the third, Orono was able to step it up, scoring two goals and forcing another game to go into overtime. With less than a minute into the overtime period, Campbellford was able to score on Orono, making the final score 3-2 and the series 2-1 for Campbellford. Game four was an important game for the Leafs, their last chance before elimination in the playoffs, and they weren't going to go down without a fight. And fight they did. Scoring all their goals in the first period, the Leafs hustled to keep their 3-1 lead throughout the game. For the first time in the series, Orono was able to win the game 3-1, making overtime unnecessary. Now that the series was tied with two wins for each team, the final game was the big one for both teams. With the game played in Orono and the support of the fans behind them, the Leafs showed the Colts whose house they were in, with some great plays and amazing penalty kills, which resulted in a 4-2 victory for Orono. Congratulations goes out to every member of the team, all of whom put in a great effort in round one. The Orono Midget Leafs will be facing the Kingston Frontenac Flyers in the second round of the playoffs, in their fight for All-Ontario. Good luck boys!
