Wednesday, February 8, 2012 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Orono Weekly Times - 3 Looking Back... Gleaned from past editions of the Orono Weekly Times 25 Years Ago... The Oshawa Harbour commission is to study a report handed down to them from a Management Committee that recommends the Marsh be maintained with some features for recreation and education. The first phase recommended would see the western outlet opened, channelization within the marsh, habitat improvement and limited public access. Jim Richards, Orono, head of the Second Marsh Defence Association, said he welcomed the report and its plan. In general he said I have to say I am pleased with this report. Richards has fought continually for years trying to maintain the marsh as a wildlife area. He said however that he felt that recommendations did have some shortcomings especially to the fact that there is not to be any public input in the future. He said it was recommended that an advisory committee of federal, provincial and municipal bureaucrats be established. He stated he would like to see this one change to include the public. Richards also said it was an ambitious plan which depended on considerable funding. The recommendation also suggested that the marsh stay in the ownership of the Commission. It also called for an official plan change to reflect its new use. constructing a wading pool at Orono Park. Mr. the Rutherford, a member of the Board, spoke to the meeting outlining the plans for the Park Board in supplying a wading pool. A motion by H. Duvall and P. Lunn authorized that a meeting between the two groups be sought to discuss probable assistance for a wading pool. A motion by Wm. Reid and H. Duvall noted the need of Orono signs on the Counties Road north of the Village. In view of the fact that the Antique Car Cavalcade will be passing through Orono this summer and staying at the Diana Motel, the Chamber is to write this Association to ask if there is any help they could give in their tour through this area. low taxes as anywhere in Canada. There isn't any doubt that Orono is "A Good Place to Live" and our farms are as productive as they are most anywhere. But for fifty years or more the population of Clarke Township and Orono has been getting less and less, farms have been getting larger and larger, and farm values lower and lower, with the result that good farms sell for less than the improvements cost... On the other hand, with the cost of living going up and up, and a talk of housing shortages in most cities, there is a large retired class living in cities on limited incomes that are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet. Every year there are thousands of city policemen and firemen retired on a lifetime pension of half pay which doesn't allow them to live as they have been accustomed to... We think that the Orono Chamber of Commerce, the Clarke Township Council and the Orono Police Trustees should join hands and devise a plan to get some of this city retired class to buy a home here, and would suggest that our Police Trustees and Township Council spend a reasonable amount of money in the classified section of city newspapers to let people know about real estate opportunities for sale here. 50 Years Ago... Twenty members of the Orono Chamber of Commerce met on Thursday evening of last week for the first under direction of their new president, Mr. Harvey Partner. The meeting was held in the newly decorated Orono Restaurant. Mr. Wm. Carman brought before the members of the Chamber a proposal of assisting the Orono Park Board in 75 Years Ago... About seventy-five percent of the people living in Orono own their own homes without a mortgage, have no debts and live comfortably on less than fifty dollars a month. A majority of the people living in Orono are retired farmers that are living off the profits that they have made farming in Clarke Township, so there can't be much wrong with a farm in Clarke Township. And on top of all this, neither Clarke Township nor the Village of Orono has any bonded debt and we have as ~ Happenings ~ Saturday, February 11, 2012 - St. George's ACW Valentine Lunch and Bake Sale, 11:30am - 1:30pm, St. George's Anglican Church Hall, Mill & Edward Streets, Newcastle.
