Wednesday, February 15, 2012 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Orono Weekly Times - 3 Looking Back... Gleaned from past editions of the Orono Weekly Times 25 Years Ago... The Orono Station of the Town of Newcastle Fire Department is in need of volunteer firemen. The station is down to a compliment of 15 volunteers when in fact there should be 20 on the roster. According to the local fire chief, Terry Hardy, the list of volunteers has been slipping over the past year to the point that it is difficult at times to have sufficient numbers available for a fire call. He said we don't even have a waiting list which always existed in the past. Volunteers to the local fire brigade will be considered and should apply at the Fire Station in Bowmanville for application forms. Volunteers are paid $24.16 for a call plus $12.08 an hour after the second hour. Not only do local firefighters provide a service to the community in firefighting but the local Association also keeps active with the promotion of dances as well as pancake breakfasts and from which the profits are donated to local groups doing community work within the area. All firemen are given qualified instruction for the job and as well experience a social aspect as a volunteer. 50 Years Ago... The Ice Skating Carnival held at the Orono Rink on Friday evening of last week met with success when over three hundred attended. This is possibly one of the largest crowds to be in attendance at the rink for a good number of years. All ages were certainly well represented and everyone joined in the fun of the evening, either as a participant or as a spectator. The entertainment for the evening took the form of public skating, costume parade and judging, girl's broom ball and a hockey game followed by more public skating. Those in costume were judged early in the evening. Prizes were awarded to the various groupings in which each held a good number of contestants. In the children's division, Valerie Mercer and Don McKenzie caught the judges' fancy for the comic dress. Susan Aslett and Larry Adams were chosen the best animal dress and Karen Homewood and David Armstrong the best nursery theme. In the adult or student division Mrs. Schmid took the prize for the ladies for the best decorated hat depicting a song title. Bob Best was the boy to win in this grouping. Mr. and Mrs. Mac Ransberry were chosen the best couple skaters of the evening, an award which they have won on other occasions. The youngest skater on the ice was Marilyn Snelder, two-and-a-half years. Mr. Lyall Lowery was acclaimed the oldest skater of the evening. 75 Years Ago...
