When I was at school, while I did reasonably well in most subjects, when it came to mathematics I was a total duffer. Quadratic equations, calculus and why two square hippopotamuses in a sum added up to another two square hippopotamuses on the other side were total mysteries to me. In recent years I have tried to understand the vagaries of math in order to at least balance my cheque book and work out how much paint to buy for the family room walls, but for the most part I am just as clueless now as I was aged twelve. However, today it turns out is actually a red letter day for mathwizards, because not only is March 14 the birthday of that hairdressers' nightmare and all round smarty pants Albert Einstein, it is also pi Day. I know what you are thinking. Why do we need a day to celebrate a pastry dish filled with fruit or meat and vegetables when every day could be pie day? Well this of course, is a different kind of pi. The official definition of pi is, `the mathematical constant equal to a circle's circumference divided by its diameter'. And the official definition of Pi Day is that it is` a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant or pi'. This bizarre holiday is only officially recognized by our American cousins and was created in 1988 by Larry Shaw,a physicist at the San Francisco Exploratorium,a museum founded in 1969 by Frank Oppenheimer, himself an experimental physicist and educator. The Exploratorium even has a website dedicated to the celebration of Pi Day where you can learn all about the history of this number and why the magic digits 3.1415 have been so important for more than 4,000 years to civilizations like the Babylonians, Egyptians and Greeks and naturally to you and me. The Exploratorium's schedule of events for March 14, 2012 includes such gems as a special homage to Albert Einstein and pi; meeting Pi Day founder Larry Shaw to find out what's so special about pi--`the irrational number that results from dividing the circumference of a circle by its diameter', and being entertained by pi limericks. The culmination of this bacchanalian celebration of all things pi is - you guessed it the `Pie serving'! The organisers throw in a little physicist humour here by declaring, `Have a slice of pie on us while it lasts (some pie is not infinite)'. Ah those wacky scientists! While Pi is a number important in many scientific endeavours it seems fruit is a big draw in computing circles and so as we already have Apple and Blackberry, I guess it was inevitable that we would eventually have raspBLUEBERRY see page 7 MIXED LEAGUE Thursdays 7 - 9 pm Top Scores 150 + Results for Mar. 8th BOWLER Game Game Game One Two Three GAME TWO 224 193 169 190 168 171 179 203 193 161 173 179 170 203 177 209 155 Greg Forget Jack Watson Susan Armstrong Bob Lewis Randy Flynn MaryLou Trolley Marg Moore Bob Kilgar Arlene Watson Don Wright Karen Wright Adrian de Laat Fae Forget Sherri Farrell Brenda de Laat Robert Forget Clayton Trolley Ken Crichton 201 238 159 237 172 185 195 193 151 159 200 150 237 212 159 222 181 160 212 171 157 165 197 154 169 2197 188 173 182 209 165 192 155 150 153 154 199 189 LADIES' LEAGUE Mondays 7-9pm NEWCASTLE YOUTH Results for March 5th Top Scores 150+ BOWLER Anne Arsenault Charlene Perrin Jackie Kindratiuk Jane Ann Tilson Joan Ard Lenore Beckmann Marilyn Major Mary Pierik Shirley Moffat Sue Carter Terri McLaughlin Game Game Game One Two Three Results for March 2nd BOWLER Game One Game Two JUNIORS OVER 50 Cassidy 113 Dawson 85 INTERMEDIATES OVER Zachary Timothy 129 Jordan 143 Jacob 141 75 89 128 105 122 247 173 154 202 153 Pro Painting "No Job Too Small" · G en eral Re pair s · Re asonable Rat e s · R eliable Se r vic e Book your Winter projects Now 155 162 251 163 159 179 176 170 154 258 175 175 SENIORS OVER 100 Zach 185 168 Taylor J 124 139 Sam 154 159 Josh 208 153 ~ Senior Rates ~ Call 905-983-5761 CARDS DURHAM COUNTY SENIORS EUCHRE MARCH 12TH RESULTS TOP SCORES 1st Merrian Hawley 86 2nd Jerry Rouseell (tie) 80 2nd John Pleasance (tie) 80 4th Mnnie Taylor (tie) 77 4th Helen Couroux (tie)77 Clifford Francis REBEKAH HALL EUCHRE MARCH 7TH RESULTS TOP SCORES 1st Marie Couroux 2nd Eileen Stevens 3rd Joya Cowan 4th Enda Pyke 5th Elaine Doty 91 86 83 80 79 Send your Orono and Newcastle Sports stories & photos to: Ph./fax:905-983-5301 · oronotimes@rogers.com The ORONO WEEKLY TIMES
