4 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, April 18, 2012 Looking Back... Gleaned from past editions of the Orono Weekly Times 25 Years Ago.... Heather Rebekah Lodge of Orono observed their fortieth anniversary on Saturday at the Oddfellow's Hall with close to ninety present for the anniversary occasion. Two charter members were present for the anniversary along with fourteen members who have served with the lodge for a full forty years. The Noble Grand, Sister Bertha White, called the evening to order which began with a banquet. Sister Olive Millson was Master of Ceremonies for the evening calling upon Rebekah Assembly officers, who were present, who brought greetings and spoke briefly reflecting the fellowship which was most evident during the course of the evening. Katherine Bridges, president of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario, said it was a wonderful evening and that it was evident that the charter members had provided leadership. She said, "I can tell you have been a busy lodge and I urge you to continue this work of love and friendship." Sister Gladys Gamsby, in speaking, likely expressed the view of all charter members when she said, "If all members obtained the happiness that I have from the lodge then it has all been worthwhile." 50 Years Ago.... About forty ladies and gentlemen were in attendance at the Orono Horticultural meeting, held in the Oddfellow's Hall on Tuesday evening. The president, Mr. John Caldwell, welcomed the gathering and the regular business was dealth with. The president announced that the District Meeting is to be held in Orono this year on the 2nd of June. Mrs. Fairbrother, delegate to the Horticultural Convention held at Niagara Falls, gave a very interesting report on the convention, showing beautiful pictures of the Falls, the flowers in the conservatory and other interesting buildings and scenery at Niagara Falls. Mrs. Fairbrother also showed some of her pictures taken at Ottawa at tulip time. Her pictures were most enjoyable. Mrs. Raymond Chapman favoured us with a lovely solo. Lunch and a social time brought the evening to a close. 75 Years Ago...
