We've got a whole lot going on What a weekend we have had locally with a number of events taking place. There were two musical events, the Adams Family, with their blending of talent from the local area and further afield played to a very appreciative audience at the Orono United Church. The concert was organized as a fundraising event for the church, and ended with a all the guests joining on stage for the final number will will the Circle be Unbroken. The following day, on Saturday afternoon many of the same people gathered in Kendal at the Kendal Community Centre for a country jamboree and a fundraising event put on by the Kendal Lions club. The combined talent on that stage was also phenomenal, many of it local. Since we have not yet devised a way to be in more than one place at a time, (though there might be opportunity in the future to send in a hologram of ourselves to any number of events at one time) there are often events we cannot cover. Judging by the two letters to the editor we received on Monday morning, it appears the Orono Town Hall annual fundraising spaghetti supper was an event not to be missed. Last week Wednesday, while the Rebekah Lodge was holding their Annual Roof Raising Dinner in their hall, which are also very well attended, the Orono Crown Lands Trust was holding their Annual General Meeting in the Orono Town Hall. Both very vital organizations to this community, the Rebekah's for their work in the community, and like every other organization today, facing declining enrolment. Their meeting hall on Church Street is in need of a new roof, and the ladies of the lodge have held monthly suppers for a few years now to raise the necessary funds for the roof repairs. Apparently the New Dutch Oven Restaurant has been hopping on weekends. They now have live country bands every Saturday and the reports heard is that they are being very well reserved. The Dutch Oven is now holding Singles Dances every Friday night, taking over from the Acres Restaurant which shut down last year. While all the music was ringing throughout the countryside, another event took place downtown Orono -- a new flag pole was erected at the Orono Town Hall. A few years ago the flag pole that was affixed to the front of the hall over the doors (which are not appropriate for a heritage building, it's been a long time since we raised the issue of the doors in this publication) was removed with the intention of installing a pole on the property in the front of the hall. The new flag pole complete with Canadian flag was installed by Scott Story, Chair of the Chilli Cook-off Committee. Every year the Cook-off Committee selects a charity to donate the proceeds of the popular event to. Over the years the committee have donated their proceeds to various not-for-profit groups including the Clarington East Foodbank, and the washroom redevelopment in the Orono Town Hall. Last year the Cook-off Committee, which is a sub-committee of the Orono Business Improvement Association opted to donate their proceeds to the flag for the Town Hall. Now everytime we look out our front window we can see the flag wafting in the gentle breezes that blow through the village. On Monday our MP, Bev Oda remembered she hadn't reimbursed the government for her stay at the Savoy last summer. Though we are a relatively small community, one would be challenged to find another community with as much going on. Spagetti Dinner Rocks To The Editor: Our Town Hall threw a fund-raiser for itself on Saturday evening, and did it rock! Guests gobbled spaghetti, desserts were laid on, Frank Stapleton skillfully auctioneered fabulous items, and Ed Morton's keys brought back great memories. Meeting, greeting and making new friends was one highlight; the exchange game brought down the house! Screams of laughter accompanied beautifully crafted gift bags as they travelled between tables an evening to remember. Our Town Hall Board takes excellent care of our National Treasure. Born in 1878, it's about to have a face-lift, an interior paint job to upkeep its beautiful self. Yours truly, Pat & Kay Lycett Proud of local students... To The Editor: I have read with interest the various activities throughout Canada and beyond regarding the ceremonies pertaining to the Vimy Ridge remembrance services, and I am especially pleased that 4,000 Canadian students have attended events in France as part of this tribute, much to their credit. I join with all Clarington residents in remembering the 3,598 brave Canadian soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in that epic 1917 battle, and I think I am certainly in the majority who feel that the 44 students from Clarke HS who attended the 95th anniversary event have done a great service to Clarington. I thank you. It was heart-warming to read the emotional, compassionate, and understanding accounts of their pilgrimage as portrayed in the writings last week (Orono Weekly Times, April 18). These two grade 10 students, Emily Flim and Maddy Darrach have reason to be pleased with their printed stories, and although I've never met either of these young ladies, I'm proud that they represent Clarington. Jim Richards, Orono Times helps out To The Editor: Thank you so much for the assisting the COAA and Orono Town Hall with the dinner theatres. Your article was a huge boost for us and the ticket sales. We are blessed to still have a local paper like the Orono Times. It was also a pleasure to meet the "gents" in the office, they made our visit very memorable. Thank You Angie Darlinson In our front page story about the water tower at the former Orono Forestry Station we had informed residents intrested in saving the tower to call Paul Jones at 905-983-5857, (we had the phone number wrong in last week's story) Correction Read More on page 3
