Six girls were enrolled as Girl Guides in the local group on Tuesday evening, April 17th, after having passed their necessary tests qualifying them to be Girl Guides. Those being enrolled were: Janice Rutherford, Elaine Forrester, Valerie Mercer, Wendy Partner, Janet Maartense and Barbara Mitchell. For this occasion the parents were invited and a goodly number were present to observe the enrolling ceremonies. The guides formed their familiar horse shoe for the ceremony when the Patrol Leaders presented the six girls to their Captain, Mrs. I. Hamm, stating that they had passed their qualifying tests. Mrs. Hamm welcomed the girls as guides and completed the enrolling ceremony. The following six girls also received their second class badges: Lynda Pears, Patty Partner, Cheryl Cooper, Lynn McMackin, Marilyn Hamm and Margaret Mitchell. Patty Partner was granted her swimming badge. Guides Judy Vagg and Lynn McMackin who are seeking their hostess badge, took over the meeting when the evening's entertainment was provided by the guides with a short skit, songs and games. Lunch was served by the guides to the parents attending. 75 Years Ago... It may be interesting to the people of Orono and vicinity, to those who have forgotten and to those who do not know, that perhaps Orono had a telephone system before they had one in Bowmanville. The late L.A. Gamsby, father of Len Gamsby, was a man with a very fertile brain and was very much interested in electrical science, and in 1876 attended the Centennial Expedition where Mr. Bell first exhibited his invention. On returning home, Mr. Gamsby proceeded to develop a telephone system for himself, manufacturing all the parts and assembled three telephones. One of these phones he installed in his drug store, now owned by Mr. J.J. Gilfillan, one in his residence where Len now lives, and the other one in the house of his brother, Mr. W.S. Gamsby, now occupied by Mr. George Mitchell. Parts of the telephone that was used in the drug store was taken to Montreal seven or eight years ago and now is on display in the museum of that place. Mr. A.D. Morton, while in the drug store heard of the telephone that was manufactured by Mr. Gamsby and asked to see it and he was not long in getting possession of the telephone to have it placed on display, this adding another interesting relic of the early history of Canada.
