Also, for the first time in over 10 years, the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant will be offering a behind-the-scenes tour by bus only, departing from their information centre. Doors Open welcome visitors ORONO WEEKLY TIMES LOCAL NEWS LOCAL EVENTS Visit Mitchell's Corners best kept secret, a film and TV studio that now houses the Kumo Jiu Jitsu School. Formerly the home of Wasik Studios, the film production company of famed Canadian producer Walter Wasik, the building still holds remnants from its past including the ON AIR lights and old projector equipment. Also in Mitchell's Corners is an excellent, creative example of adaptive reuse. The Carriage Country Baptist Church will be offering tours of how they turned a former Public School into a very popular Church. On your way to Enfield, stop at the Knox Family Farm, home of the extremely popular Knox's Pumpkin Farm to check out the animals and produce. Many original features of this enormous frame house, once called "Shangri-la," on this fourth-generation family farm have been preserved, including 11-foot-high wood-panelled ceilings. The rooms and foyers are large, patterned wainscotting extends three feet up the walls and the ornately carved door frames almost reach the ceiling. Once in Enfield, the Enfield United Church offers a look into the past. Built in 1877, this Church has no plumbing which meant that the congregation had to use an outhouse! A beautiful walk through a peony garden is in store for you at the Denny Homestead. Located next to a stone house built in the late 1800's, the Denny's garden is a "mustsee" for any horticulturist. The 4H Gardening Club are going to help the Orono Horticulture Club look after the public gardens in the village this summer. Club members refurbished a garden at the Orono Public School on Tuesday morning. Once in Solina, stop by the Solina Community Centre to see exhibits on Solina's history and enjoy a homemade light lunch made from local produce. Also open in Solina is the former Solina Schoolhouse. Now a private home, this Schoolhouse still has many of its original features, including the original chalkboard. Take a walking tour of the village including a visit to one of several small, historic barns in the village. Just west of the village, is Eldad United Church. This quaint, country church is located on a hill that provides an excellent view of the village of Solina. Inside, you can marvel at the stainned glass windows that were donated to the Church by generations of local families. East of Solina in the village of Hampton, historical photographs line the walls of their United Church which will be open for the day. While in Hampton, stop by the old Hampton Creamery. The future of this building is uncertain. This might be your last chance to visit this piece of Hampton's history and see the old pulleys and refrigeration units that were once a part of this thriving dairy business. Enjoy a fun filled day with lots of exciting adventures as you explore the hidden treasures in Clarington.
