According to the Whitby OPP Detachment, they received notification that a driver had hit a bear on the highway. Their officer was en route to the scene but was called off when they were notified that the Ministry of Transportation crew removed the dead bear from the highway. The Orono Times, was on the scene just after MTO contractors placed the dead bear in the back of their truck. The contractors told The Times that police had shot the one-year-old cub which was mortally wounded lying along the barrier on the south bound lane just south of the north Orono ramp. A CHEX TV camera man on scene reported that it was the Kawartha OPP who euthanized the bear. In preparation for this article the Orono Times searched the internet for any reports of bears killed on Highway 115 in Orono, to find out if anyone had witnessed the incident and posted the account on the web; no report was found. Coincidently, a search did reveal that on the same afternoon, Thursday, June 15, a bear was hit and killed on Highway 115 near Rock Creek, Colorado. According to the KKTV News article, State Troopers say the bear tried to run after being hit but died after only going a few feet. The Directors of the Orono Chamber of Commerce met in the Kumrite Inn for their regular monthly meeting. A letter was read from the Tip Top Canners stating that at the pre- sent time they had no need of an extra canning factory as the factories they now operate can supply their demand throughout the province. It was moved by W.E. Armstrong, and seconded by C.R. Miller that the president and secretary, Mr. O.W. Rolph and Major J.C. Gamey be a committee to approach the band and see if some suitable arrangements cannot be made to have the band give a concert on the main street every Saturday night. It seems there has not been very much harmony betweenthe band and some of the citizens of Orono and this committee is to try and straighten out the differences of opinion so that all will work in harmony together. It was realized that a band was a great asset to any town and there are towns that would give a lot to have one for a good live band will draw more people into town than nearly anything else.
