Wednesday, June 20, 2012 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Orono Weekly Times - 9 Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster handed out the 11th annual Awards for Academic Excellence in the council chambers at the beginning of Monday night's council meeting. Awards were presented to graduating students who were identified by their school's administration as having demonstrated excellence in their academic achievements as well as a commitment to leadership and community service. Local recipients of this year's Awards for Academic Excellence are: Brooklynn Charlinski from St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Elementary School, Hannah Hosein from The Pines Senior Public School and Cordel Stultiens from Clarke High School. In all, 29 awards were handed out this year. All students received a personal framed certificate from the Mayor at the awards ceremony. New season starts for Orono Bantams by Emily Manns Only a couple games into the season so far, and although they have yet to come out victorious, the Orono Bantam Soccer Team are coming together and working harder than ever before. With 21 members this season, a combination of both familiar faces and new recruits, their individual skills and talents have really begun to shine. I have never been one to find interest in watching sports, except maybe the summer Olympics when they came to Canada, but I have to say that I couldn't help but cling to the edge of my seat as I watched the ball weave between the opposing players, handled with a level of technique that I wouldn't have expected from that age group. Their most recent game on June 14th against Courtice High School was really close, with only a difference of one point between them. With not just new players, but new coaches as well, there are no doubt some rough edges to smooth out, but from the looks of it, they seem to be in for a good season this year. Their coordination, cooperativeness, and support for one another are definitely noteworthy, not to mention inspirational. I look forward to attending every one of their games, all the way to the tournament. CHURCH DIRECTORY Orono United Church with Reverend Ceri Rees 111 Church Street N.
