10 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, June 20, 2012 Residents encouraged to conserve water Fifty years ago Keith West was presented with the Al Clarke Trophy for being the Most Valuable Player of the Bowmanville Olympia Intermediate "A" hockey team which he played for after the Orono Orphans disbanded. West says that year he got 35 goals and 30 assists in 30 games. LASSIFIE C Advertising D ESTATE AUCTION Newtonville Residents using Durham Region's municipal water supply are asked to help maintain the water levels by conserving water and observing odd-even day lawn watering. "We've had an unusually warm, dry spring this year," said Greg Lymer, Manager of Technical Support. "In order to ensure an adequate supply of water is maintained throughout the summer, we want to remind residents about the importance of water conservation. If we experience a hot, dry summer, we may have to consider mandatory water restrictions." Under the Regional Water System By-law 89-2003, oddeven day lawn watering is mandatory from May through September. Odd-even day lawn watering means you should water only on odd calendar days if your home address is an odd number or, if your home address is even, then water only on even calendar days. Observing this by-law will help to decrease the amount of water consumed each summer. Residents can also conserve water by only watering grass when necessary. A healthy lawn requires 2.5 centimetres (or one inch) of water per week, including rainfall. Free rain gauges are available through the Region of Durham to help you measure how much water your lawn receives, and to avoid overwatering. For more water conservation tips, and information on how to get your free rain gauge, please visit www.durham.ca/ waterconservation, or call the Region of Durham's Technical Support Division at 905-6687711 (toll-free 1-800-3721102).
