18 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 Goodbye books, hello Summer By Emily Manns Another school year is drawing to a close for both students and teachers alike as they preoccupy themselves with their end-ofthe-year exams. Hopefully the climbing heat and clear blue skies won't deter them too much from their studies. It definitely gives them something to look forward to once the school doors close and the Summer fun begins. I've seen my fair share of Summer's come and go, but this one definitely strikes me as one of the hottest yet! Barely halfway through June, and it already felt like mid-summer, too hot to set even a single toe outside without breaking into a sweat. Business will surely be booming at the nearest beaches and pools, just so people can feel a little more comfortable. I am definitely all for rest, relaxation and recreation, but I also like to know that every assignment, project, textbook reading and class lecture won't suddenly vacate my brain the instant I'm out of school. It is in our nature to forget those things we do not dwell upon or reinforce on a daily basis. As the saying goes; "if you don't use it, you lose it." I know that teachers would be thrilled to know that something they brought into their classrooms will remain with their students long after they have graduated school and moved on to bigger things. With that said, I wish everyone good luck on their exams, and that this summer be filled with fun times, happy memories, and opportunities to apply those newly honed skills. Happy Canada Day!
