4 - Orono Weekly Times 61937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, July 4th, 2012 Looking Back... Gleaned from past editions of the Orono Weekly Times Mr. Ken Adams of Orono had the oldest car, a 1913 Ford, at an Antique Car Rally held at Orono Park. The old cars paraded through the village and the Tree Nursery property. A short meeting was held to announce the up-coming London to Brighton (Ontario) tour scheduled for later in July. 25 Years Ago... New fences, barbeques, footbridge and refurbished tennis courts were some of the many improvements the Orono Park received just in time for the busy summer months. The work was done by the Community Services department at a cost of almost $7,000. Thirty people attended a meeting to oppose a 21 lot estate residential development just west of Leskard near Wilmot Creek. Jack Hallam pointed out that the area currently abounds in fish, birds and is a natural wild refuge. He said the consultants report only referred to 6 bird species in the area while others have seen over 40! Mr. Hallam also noted the report listed only rainbow trout in the stream and he himself had seen brook and brown trout. The members may not oppose a smaller development proposal provided ironclad safeguards were provided. 75 Years Ago... The Durham Central Agricultural Society purchased Dr. McCullough's pasture field to enlarge the fair grounds. The Fair Board plans to enlarge the race track to attract top notch race horses and have the best harness horse racing anywhere. Plans also include tearing down the old grandstand and replacing it with a new larger one. With the churches closed for the summer a Sunday afternoon community sing event was planned. It gave the people a chance to meet and sing the old hymns and familiar songs that they liked so much. The collection raised would be given to Orono Park. Mr. Robert Foster, a longtime Orono booster, was in town on a visit. Mr. Foster says his asthma bothers him most often when he is in Toronto or visiting his son near Hamilton, but not in Orono. He says the air in Orono is as different as a poor beer to a good scotch whiskey. 50 Years Ago... The grade seven and eight students of the Orono Public School travelled to Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario. They were accompanied by their teacher, Mr. A. McGee and a number of parents for a total of forty for the trip. The students were most interested in the Agricultural Building where antique farm equipment was on display. They also saw working saw and grist mills and had a short ride in a horse drawn bateaux. The first International Peterborough Stockcar Championship for $20,000 was held at Mosport. Paul Goldsmith of Michigan was the winner. He completed 100 lapse of the 2.4 mile paved track in 2 hours, 53.68 minutes. The runner up, Roger Ward of Indiana, was only 1.2 seconds behind. Although only 5,600 people attended it was predicted that Mosport Park would develop into one of the nation's top tourist attractions.
