Collis stated, "Numerous names have been floated by the riding association, and we are actively looking for a candidate." Rumours are swirling in the Liberal Association that a candidate is ready to announce his intention to run for the nomination -Former Clarington Mayor John Mutton. Supporters of Mutton's Candidacy have been actively sending letters to the Liberal executive. Emails state, "Mutton has the leadership and charisma to take this riding away from the Conservatives." Mutton supporters go on to say, "We need someone who is probusiness and pro-union and John Mutton is that man." "Any Candidate wishing to run is welcome to do so, I'm pleased to sit down with any candidate and speak to them about a possible run." Collis said. DurhamFederal NDP Riding President, Jesse Forbes says, "While no NDP candidate has come forward to get nomination papers, rumours are that there are three actively looking at the candidacy." Forbes said, "We, the NDP, have a really good chance of taking this riding. We came in second in the last election beating the Liberals. Residents are looking at the NDP and realizing that we are not a one issue party and we are working hard for the working class." Forbes talked about the possibility of the NDP capturing the riding in the upcoming election. "The conservatives don't necessarily have a lock on this riding, our national poll numbers are up and it's going to be hard to run from the Omnibus Bill that Harper pushed through the House last month." "I'm not really sure what the issues in the by-election are going to be, the biggest issues I've seen come up in the last couple of years, is supply-management." Forbes said. He admits that, "the upcoming election will also be driven by economics, and the government's approval rating, but at the end of the day local issues will mostly drive this by-election." According to the Federal Elections Act, the Prime Minister has six months after the chair is vacated to call a by-election. The latest the by-election can be called is in January of 2013, but speculation is that it will be called by late summer early fall. ST.
