Mrs. Prudence Buck, whose home is near the CNR line at the north end of the village, said she believes she saw and heard two bears snorting and pawing around a small park about 10:30 p.m. Monday. One of the bears, she said, appeared to be in a tree. The park for her children contains a barbeque, picnic tables and swings. The game warden and Mrs. Buck were unable to confirm the bears had been there. 75 Years Ago... Good will between communities means considerable, especially when you want some assistance when entertaining the public on a big day or some special event in your community. This may be termed reciprocity, one helping the other the value cannot be estimated only on the success of the event. Fraternal organizations are our greatest missionaries in this line, visits back and forth keep up the spirit of friendship and respect and the constant desire to help one another and other organizations would do well to copy their spirit. The Bowmanville Band are coming to Orono on Saturday Scott Bouwmeester of Orono shows off his prize winning garden. Scott's plant and vegetable garden was awarded the first prize in the outdoor garden category by Minnie Zegers who was the judge of the Junior Gardener's summer show. 50 Years Ago.... A game warden from Orono investigated a report that bears were seen and heard at the outskirts of The Orono Horticultural Socitiey donated a bench to the Orono Town Hall Board. This band is always willing to assist in the line of entertainment and deserve our loyal support in the mission of good will. We boast a fine band here, the Midland Regimental Band and rightly so they are a fine bunch of fellows, good instruments and look smart in their appearance and give a good account of themselves on engagements away from home, but somehow their exhibitions at home have been far between. The citizens have always given liberally of their purse strings and would do so again if required. Bands have to be financed just the same as other things, but the support, financial or otherwise, is just in proportion to the amount of service rendered to the community. The Legion Band excels in service to their community, so let's extend our hearty cooperation and good will toward them on Saturday night. PICASSO Continued from front day is Anfossi's daughter Eliza. Eliza is 13 years old, going into grade nine. Eliza said that art has run in the family for a long time. " I never really did a lot of art in school, but my mom is the visual arts teacher at the High School so I picked it up through her." She went on to say, "My grandmother taught me how to sew, so that was important to me as well." Eliza will be showcasing a wide range of different work at the Picasso's Picnic. "Besides the sewing, I will be showcasing key chains that I've created, We have a button machine (at home) so I'll be showcasing some of the buttons that I've created. And my newest work -mobiles, that are made out of driftwood." This isn't the first time Eliza will be able to showcase her work. "I've done a couple of shows before this." She went on to say, "The money that I've made at the art shows, and the money I hope to make at this one, will be put forward to a trip I want to go on this year with my High School." Asked if any friends will be showing up to support her, Eliza was hopeful, "While I haven't told any of my friends about my booth at the Artfest, I think some of them might show up anyway because they know of the event." Picasso's Picnic will be held at the VAC, located at 143 Simpsons Ave in Bowmanville. In a news release released by the VAC they describe what they are trying to accomplish by holding the event this Saturday, "We believe the arts are important. Fostering creativity in our young people plays an integral part in developing innovative, dynamic and caring members of our community." ORONO WEEKLY TIMES 905-983-5301 · oronotimes@rogers.com
